full termi question

My buddy just bought a R1 and got slips. I was there when he picked it up and was talking to the dealer and we were talking about a full graves system. he told me that Yamaha had 3 cats in it. which had me thinking. how many does our bike have and when you get a full system are they removed? if not how do you get rid of them or do you just leave them in. what did you guys with the full system do?

please i am not comparing any other exhaust systems. I just want to know stock how many cats are on the bike and if you get the full system are they still there. if they are do you guys remove them?

I would think the 1199 stock system has only one...as the pipe is 2-1-2... The Termi and Termi slips remove the Cat and lots of weight too...This is one reason the bikes like the R and the Tricolore which had full system or slips as stock were shipped with stock system...its illegal to sell a brand new bike without catalytic converter... The cat sits in that boat anchor under the bike...
Why the R1 would have 3 is a mystery to me..unless they are somehow in series???No idea..

my 09 R1 had only 1 in the y-pipe / midpipe if I'm not mistaken... swapped that out and I was shooting flames all day...

Yep the stock system is in the silencers. With the full they are removed with the Termi silencers. Not sure how they sold Tri hat came with slip on. Did it come with the stock and slip on added later?

Yes, part of the Tri package was that it came with the Termi slip-ons and map to be installed. The bike shipped with the stock slip-ons and I had mine changed at the 621mi service.

the stock system has two single parallel cats. one in each can.

the termi cans don't have these but are fairly similar to the flow of the stock cans, with a perforated pipe in place of the cans and bigger exits to the outside.

there is nothing in the headers in either of the systems (except the flapper valve on the stock one).

My 2008 R1 had only one cat but also per the dealer had some kind of filter. Maybe charcoal? Dumped both for a graves exhaust.

Termi full system only saves a little weight probably because its bigger overall system. I wonder how much the cat portion weighs in the stock system...

I have a 2010 R1 and can confirm that there is only 1 cat which is the midpipe. I have the graves 3/4 system which eliminates the cat.
