axle pinch bolts

Refitting the front wheel today & snapped an axle pinch bolt. Usual story don't read the instructions until something isn't going to plan

I doubt im the 1st to do it so what method have people used to get them out? Base model forks but I am not so keen on taking a drill to the leftover bolt in there to use an easy out?

How? Did you crank on one before another?

"crank on one" seems to be the theme. 19nm (14ftlb). Its a 2 bolt precision clamp. You should alternate the torque sequence between bolts incrementally until you have achieved the correct value on both bolts. Im just not sure at a recommended value of 19nm which is not a lot, how someone snaps the head off one of these.

That's what I'm saying! Hand tight then alternate between the two and both sides. It's like torquing on a wheel.

have done it 4 times previous and done the 1 each side & back across to the 19nm which is bugger all really so torque wrench is in the bin. 3 out of 4 torqued up easily but the last bolt not so

1. requires a drill to remove.. ugh dont ask how I know..

Also.. the pattern is 1-2-1 till torqued to 7ft lbs for base model and 15ft lbs for S/R ohlins suspension..

If some of the bolt is still sticking out can you cut a slot in it so you can use a screw driver on it. If not easy out time for you. Top tip if it's possible take the head of the snapped bolt and drill a small pilot hole 1.6mm through it on a bench/vice. Then put it back on the snapped bolt and use it as a drill guide. Remove and go up a drill size, repeat this until required size for easy out has been achieved.

I don't know what the metal spec of the bolts are but if they are made out of some sort of granite and nails alloy get some cobalt drills. Use in a high torque drill at a slow rpm 400-1500.
