I Ride: 15 Pani R ( I weep a little sometimes )
Had the S for daily use, now have the R and not for daily use so its ok that it is more track focused- preferable even. I still do miss the LED headlights, those things were bright as heck and instilled a sense of nighttime confidence in the dangerous traffic. With the R, I can still go to brighter lamps from Phillips if I wanted to but the installation requires some disassembly of the front and the top shelf lamps don't last as long as the ones I have in there now.
Thanks from youngR

jeezzbreez. You definitely had some mileage on your previous Panigale. I only have 3k on my 12 Pani S.

Yeah i thought i would miss LED but since I dont take it to street anymore, doesnt bother me. I took it out for the Track housing.

I kicked around which bike I wanted for several weeks. At the end of the day, the motor differences are miniscule. In other words, it looks/sounds good on paper, but I honestly don't think I would jump on the R and immediately go 2 seconds faster.

Besides, we are kind of "splitting hairs" when measuring the performance between the 2 bikes. I mean, there isn't a single rider in the world who could honestly say a 1299S is "holding them back". If somebody can't podium with a package that has 200hp, 100lb/ft of torque, TC, WC, LC, Cornering ABS Clutchless Up/Down shifts and weighs under 400lbs in race trim...then they need to work on their racecraft and overall skillset.

In other words, if somebody finishes in 4th place and says "I could have podium'ed if I would have been on an R"...I will have to call bullshit. Haha

I wanted the updates that came with the 1299 and in all honesty, I want to try the electronic suspension. I haven't heard a lot of good things about it as it pertains to track riding in the past, but RRW had a lot of good things to say about the EL suspension on the 1299S. He said the suspension would stiffen under hard braking, then soften as the brakes were trailed off, allowing him to make the apex no matter how hard he charged the corner. I am fascinated by that and want to try it.

If I don't like it, then I will remove the EC stuff (or just run it in "Fixed" mode).
Where can I learn more about what the 1299 qualifies for in the US? I was told the Pani R would be the bike for racing b/c the smaller displacement would allow it to qualify for more classes, but it seems that might be false. I'm definitely interested in learning more.

Thanks!

Most race organizations go off OEM displacement. You can run the 1299S in the same classes as the 1199R.

A Superbike, A Superstock, F1, HWT SS, HWT SB.

I just got my base 1299 last week and already done 1.5k km on it and I can't be more pleased with it. I've owned a few bikes in the last 10 years and had a 1199R until Ducati decided to improve on it with the 1299... IMHO the base models is more than sufficient for a novice rider or even a track junkie unless you are a pro racer.. The gizmos that come with the S or R are for vanity or bragging rights, again just my opinion... I'm in the fast group in trackdays but I know I'm not anywhere near good enough to say my base shocks are not good enough for me and I need Ohlins.. Just need to set them up properly

Which Ducati 1299 do you plan on purchasing?

Just purchased a 2016 Panigale 1299 S. 1200 miles on the clock. She's a lovely machine.
