Ducati Panigale R Fuel Tank Brushed Aluminum

Hi All

This question is for all the Panigale R owners.

I would like to know if the brushed aluminum on the fuel tank is actually the fuel tank exposed aluminum tank or if it's a brushed aluminum high quality decal?

I am assuming it's the actual tank and not a decal.

Cheers
Chris

Yes, R model tanks are a brushed aluminum which is the actual tank, not a decal.

2014 and older models are exposed brushed aluminum with a matt/textured finish.

2015 and onwards are also brushed aluminum, but with a smooth gloss lacquer finish.

My only assumption on why they changed it is because the newer gloss lacquer finish is far easier to repair and/or polish out minor dings and scratches.

Indeed, from my own experience of a lowside on track, 2014 model, the tank was a write off as I couldn't repair the matt brushed aluminum finish. If it had been the newer tank, I dare say I could of got away with it and buffed it out.

You got rid of the tank because you couldn't restore the original finish? Obviously you could paint it something similar or whatever but was it something else why you tossed it?

Insurance replaces all minor damages (even a tiny scratch). If you claimed the crash to your insurance, they probably replaced a lot of things. I dare to ask me how I know. Hint... 2016 Pani R + Motorcycle lift=????

I never got rid of the tank. I traded up for a 2015 R and the dealer said it wouldn't matter, they took it anyways and they replaced the tank. I've been a fairly long standing customer with them.

Trouble was, although small, it was quite a deep mark on the aluminum. I guess you could try to re-brush or finish the aluminum. After seeing the new tank on the 2015 R, in hindsight you probably could of gently cleaned it up and then lacquered it. But either way it wouldn't of been like the original. Someone with the right expertese I'm sure could of done something with it, but at the time I didn't know anyone locally and then I decided to upgrade.

You can't really see it, but the mark in the middle of the picture was like a gouge
