Sleeves and rings. One days work if you're experienced, clear the weekend if you're handy, let someone else do it if you're not sure if your tool kit is really complete. Also check the ring grooves and skirt, mine was worn so the pistons were changed as well
Thanks from able duc

Doesn't the R run less rings and an aluminum cylinder sleeve vs. cast iron like on the non-R bikes?

Just FYI:

I’ve had 2 rebuilds on a 2015 R (2400 miles & 6400 miles) due to excessive blow by into the air box and draining out thru the drain tube - both times required new sleeves, pistons & rings....after 11,000 miles it required another rebuild, due to the same issue - I have since moved on to a 1299SL

Man, 2 rebuilds and a third at 11,000 miles. That's an expensive ordeal!

I just ordered the special tools to remove the liners and I see that the cases don't need to be split due to plugs on the cases for access to remove the gudgeon pins. There's a ducati tool especially to insert the Piston pin clip through those plug holes which runs over $500.

I guess you got to pay to play.

Cheers!

Surprised other two ring models not having same issues...1199SL same engine basically and 1299SL has the two ring piston. Wonder why 15-16 R's would be only one's with this issue?

Probably because they’re more of them to go bad. Larger sample size. I would also argue that $pecial Edition bikes tend to be garage queens reducing that sample further.
