2015 Panigale R Motor Blown?

Hi,

Had a great time at a track day event except it was cut short due to being blacked flagged because of excessive smoke coming out of the exhaust.
After going through the bike there was a lot of oil in the air box and when starting the bike (much harder to start now) it would spew smoke when I crack the throttle. I'm in the process of tearing down the bike since I believe its due to some sort of blow by from the piston/ rings which is directing lots of oil into the airbox.

Any other thought what happened to the motor?

I'll keep you updated as I get ready to do a leak down test and eventual teardown.

Thanks

My ‘15 R had a ton of blow-by...had to clean all the oil out of air box after each track day. Bike still ran fine....until it spun a rod bearing and grenaded. Rebuilt/blueprinted engine (done right) has zero blow-by-

Thanks for the info. My blow by is excessive, so looking forward to seeing what is really causing this.

How many miles on the bike?

TAFFSPEED Mar 25th 2018 08:41 AM

Only around 2800 miles and of course warranty expired

Track only bike? If so, I believe 2800 km is over the racing rebuild interval on these bikes. The joy of a poor rod ratio I guess. I had to rebuild my road engine at 24k km (15k miles) because of excessive blow by. I do trackdays every week though, som in hindsight I should have changed the oil waaay more often than the 7500 mile interval described in the manual... I do now though...

I just sold my 1199s for a 1199SL.

Never noticed any oil burning out the exhaust on my 1199s, although it did leak from the rocket cover.

Started up the SL for the first time (previous owner put 1k Miles on her) and I blew oil smoke from the exhaust pretty bad for a couple min at idle then stopped. Due to the weather, have not had a chance to ride it yet. The manual does say due to the 2 ring configuration to expect more oil consumption than the standard 1199, but I'm hoping this is "normal"?

Not sure how long its sat before I started it. ..could have been a long while. I did change the oil.

I wouldn’t be blaming oil.... I did my oil changes on my 04 R1 every 10,000kms/6000miles would only put in semi synthetic. Thrashed that bike and had no issues sold it at 80,000kms it’s still going today but someone has put a new dash on it.

As you said price you pay for racing a short stroke oversquare engine.

You can watch brand new bikes out of the crate with blue smoke on startup very very common on a panigale.

To an extent, yes, fresh oil isn't a complete cure by any means, but it does extend the life of the engine. The reason isn't the oversquare setup, but more the low compression height and short skirt (compared to the bore size) and short rod length compared to stroke. The poor rod/stroke ratio gives it high sideways forces and the low piston makes it prone to rocking, a combination which will wear the cylinder quickly (compared to the R1) if not properly lubricated. It's a tradeoff Ducati had to do in order to keep the external dimensions of the engine, as a longer rod would mean the cylinder deck would need to be taller.

so this is what I have to look forward to :p
