Here is my take. I own a 1299s Street and a 1299s full race. I could have gotten a V4 but for me it was all about the experience. The 1199 and 1299 to me are the Ferrari's of the motorcycle world. Brutal, fast and when you are done riding or driving you know you just had the time of your life and it is memorable. The V4 on the other had is like owning a really sweet Audi R8 V10. It does everything great. But so does BMW or a Porsche. For me I will always take the Ducati, Lamborghini the Ferrari or the Zonda. Those cars have a soul. And before anyone get worked up on the car thing yes. I have a BMW but the BMW I have is before they made them all soft and heavy. E46 M3 Baby!!! Screaming NA inline 6. Not some fat 4000 lbs V8 electric steering BS!!! 3800 lbs twin turbo inline 6 with fake sound pumped into the cabin. Seriously BMW WTF!!!!

Is this a motorcycle forum. I will double check the website. Too many people on meds I think. BMW has their own forum too...

they are all absolutely deafening, true. but to my ears, the Yamaha and the Ducati sound glorious, while everything else, particularly the Hondas, are literally painful to hear. There is a high pitched screechy tinninness to the Honda in particular that's just like fingernails on a chalkboard. At 130db.

1) the 1299S will never, ever be sold. It is the pinnacle, the final evolution of the V-twin superbike, harkening back to the glory-filled days of the 916 vs RC51 and the dominance of the 999.

2) reality is that, with my 1299 now three years old, that it is only a matter of time before I purchase another superbike. It will most likely be a Ducati; I rode BMWs for many, many years before Ducati earned my brand loyalty, and earned in such a manner is not likely to be given away easily.

3) So some sort of V-4 is inevitably in my future. I reserve final judgement until I actually test ride one, but I have little doubt that the Panigale V-4 will be in many ways easier and more forgiving than the 1299, which is already a far more forgiving sportbike than Ducatis of yore. But this is not enough to be economically viable - getting my money's worth in other words. For example, when I test rode the Multistrada DVT, I found it to be nicer. But only marginally so, and certainly not worth the cash outlay on top of trading in my dual-spark Multistrada. So the Multistrada stayed. WIth the V-4, 226hp is a nice number; 90lb/ft torque isn't a price I'm willing to pay for it however. It's ergonomically clever and hides its weight well. But it's still heavy. And from an engineering perspective, other than turning the Desmosedici GP motor into one that's reliable and streetworthy, there's nothing clever about it. A perimeter frame?? Meh styling? Electronics that are largely available to a 1299 owner via a software upgrade? There's nothing daring about it. Yes, Preziosi's monocoque failed miserably in MotoGP, but it was a damned good idea and totally out of the box thinking. I mean on the level of John Britten out of the box. That has been a huge selling point and continues to add value to the pleasure of ownership of the 1299.

4) TLDR: I will eventually buy a V-4. But there's going to be some kind of genius engineering on it, or other bit of cleverness that isn't on the current V-4. It'll then be worth the outlay and become a stablemate to the 1299.

Funny, people said the same thing about the 1098/1198 when the 1199 came out.

The 11199 was too tame, too sterile, it wasn't a "real" Ducati. They preferred the outgoing version, were going to keep it forever, for them it represented all that was right about a Ducati.

Not saying you're wrong, mind you, it's all personal opinion. But we've seen this cycle before.

To me, Ducati is always trying to make their superbike faster. I appreciate this. They're willing to give up on any tradition they might have in order to have a faster bike. How many other manufacturers have been willing to shake up how they build a bike in the name of more speed? Last time you saw a Japanese superbike without an I4 and a perimeter frame?

Every new bike they come out with should be easier to ride, otherwise they're doing it wrong.

Most people like to justify to themselves and others why their current bike is better than the new one on offer . If they weren’t considering changes you wouldn’t have to or bother .
I do it all the time but always end up with the thing I said was worse than what I already have . It never has been worse
