1299 Ohlins electronic damper - same as Kawasaki?

A buddy of mine has a ZX-10RR, we're checking out each other's bikes, when I realize that the steering dampers appear to be identical, down to the type of plug for the wiring. Only difference is that ours are silver and Kawasaki uses matte black.

Which got me thinking...my steering damper is covered in matte black tape to keep the reflection of it from obscuring the dash. As long as the dampers have no internal differences, why not just slap a black one on, to solve the reflection problem without resorting to the messy appearance of tape?

That would be kinda cool if it worked.

I'm tempted to buy one and just test it out. A used 1299S damper sells for a lot more than a ZX-10R damper, despite both being Ohlins EC units.

So either there's a difference, or the difference is just the make of the bike....

well, IF the parts are interchangeable and IF the matte black finish on the Kawasaki Ohlins kills the glare, then we'll have a nice OEM-appearing solution

I'll try to call and get someone on the phone to confirm or deny. But my gut says they're the same damned thing - even the control units have the same plug pinout shape.

the answer is yes...and no. Yes, the part is the same. But the shaft for the ZX-10 is nearly an inch shorter, meaning the bike won't turn right.

oh well, it was worth a shot. I personally feel the black matte damper looks not only killer, but does create less reflective glare on the dash.

I've stuck with this, being a stubborn bastard, and I now have what I believe is complete information regarding using an electronic Ohlins steering damper from a Kawasaki ZX-10R.

The damper internals are identical. When plugged in, there's no difference in handling.

The matte black finish dramatically reduces glare. If glare from the steering damper is driving you crazy, it's something to consider.

The difference in length is 18mm. The stock mounting point cannot be used. So, options are:
- take apart your silver steering damper, put that rod into the matte black steering damper, send both off to get the oil filled (I believe the oil is filled under pressure). Then have a spare steering damper you can't use, but hopefully a ZX-10R owner will be looking for that silver look and buy it off you....

- use a new mounting point. I bought two - a cheap one off of Amazon for $18, and a $70 Ducabike unit. Neither aligns the steering damper parallel with the triple clamp when the bars are centered, but both function fine. To get the steering damper to align, one must use Ducabike clip-ons with the Ducabike steering damper, or modify the mounts. Being the cheap experimental one, I drilled and tapped an M6 x 1.0 hole straight into the end of the mount. That's one way to get things to align properly. The other is to slice a chunk off the Ducabike mount and tap an M6 hole into the end.

- the control units look identical. Hell, even the numbers on the back are largely the same. but plug a Kawasaki SCU into the 1299 and the dash freaks out with SCU/DES warnings. So they might appear identical, but the software inside must be different.

- finally, the heim joint at the end of the Kawasaki/Ohlins damper is an M8 hole, whereas the Ducati/Ohlins uses an M6. I managed to find a sleeve to reduce the diameter from 8mm to 6mm, but using the same mounting spacers as used on the main mounting point (two spacers, two green O-rings) will also have the same effect of allowing the use of an M6 bolt in the M8 hole.
