The Ducati 899 Panigale is on its way out, to be replaced for 2016 by a new 959 Panigale. The new sportbike was revealed in an executive order released by the California Air Resources Board, certifying it for sale in the state. The new 959 Panigale will assuredly be one of the nine new models Ducati has promised will debut at EICMA in November.

According to the CARB document, the 959 Panigale will be powered by a 955cc engine, a 57cc boost from the 899. The certification document does not reveal any further details, though we can safely assume the engine is a 90-degree V-Twin like other Ducati sportbikes. Itíll be curious to learn how the bore and stroke differ from the outgoing modelís 100 mm x 57.2 mm.

Despite the larger engine, the 959 Panigale has lower hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emission levels than the 899, an attempt to meet new Euro 4 emission standards which come into effect in Europe on Jan. 1, 2016.

As for any other details, weíll have to wait until the lead up to EICMA where the 959 Panigale will make its debut.

I really wish Ducati matched their engine displacements to their bike's names. These discrepancies aren't good for my OCD!

When the 1098 came out (which was 1099cc) they said they couldn't call it a 1099 because no one in the U.S. would buy it since to all of us 1099 means "Taxes" and it's a negative connotation! ;)

So what does 898 and 955 connote vs. 899 and 959 respectively?

Were they trying to get away from the 848 so they called it a 899 instead? Perhaps they are trying to stick with the XZ99 nomenclature?

Either way, two years for a model line up is a real disappointment. If this turns out to be true, then I am done and the 899 will likely be my last Ducati. I will have to find another background image for my desktop and iPhone. Probably will go with a Roundel...

Whoa, didn't really expect a bump in displacement for the 899. I would have gone with a 916 just for nostalgic reasons though.

This may screw up the race classes now.. Will they outlaw the 1199/1299 in the classes now that a 959 will be available? And is the Panigale R remaining or do we lose that to Euro4 emissions?

Won't affect race classes one bit. That's not how they determine the capacity limits in the pro series. In club racing, the twin's have always been allowed to run up to 999cc with the 750 4's in just about every org I've ever seen. So the 959 would run everywhere the 899 could.

I don't get it, why the increase in displacement, I thought the point of the 899 is that it's not overwhelmingly powerful. Does any complain about lack of power on the 899?

Jarel did. Why else would he throw an 1199R motor into his 899 track bike? Lol

Just kidding.

I am guessing 160 hp.
