Hypermotard 821 Clutch Change, Advice on Clutch Tool

Hi All,

Anyone here has done a clutch pack change on their Hypermotard 821 (mine is a 2014 Standard (non-sp) Hypermotard)? From the mechanical diagram it seems like there's no need to remove the basket retaining nut to change the clutch. However from the Service manual it states you need to remove the basket retaining nut in order to change the clutch. Do you guys know if you need to remove this nut when changing the clutch?

Reason I ask is, you'll need to design your own tool or buy the clutch housing tool ($150) online in order to remove this nut.

Also when you guys change the clutch pack, is it suggested to also change the clutch springs?

You get some threaded rod and nuts from a local bolt supplier as opposed to buying the retaining bolt kit(#4 in diagram). Those 2 threaded rods n nuts hold the slipper assembly together when the 4 big springs are removed(threaded rod n nuts compress 4 smaller springs and keep the lressurebplaye together). It is damn near impossible to reassemble without them threaded rods. Believe me, I tried. I have had mine out numerous times. The threaded rod dimensions can be found online, I dont remember the size and pitch but it can all be purchased for under $5

Hi Araitim,

I think I get what you are talking about. Thank for the advice, I'll definitely watch out for it during my change. Have you done this clutch pack service yourself before? Any chance you know if you need to take the basket retaining bolt out with the clutch tool?

The center basket nut can be removed with an impact gun and holding the brake. I have replaced clutch pack before. You get the threaded rod to hold the pressure plate together, remove the 4 Allen head bolts that hold the whole assembly down on the springs. Once those are removed all the plates and pressure plate slide out. If you want the basket out you will need to hit it with the impact gun. Once that nut is off the basket comes out.
