I definitely hear where you are coming from, and I think the new Monster is gorgeous too. And I also agree that around town 145hp is more than enough for me from a functional standpoint. The engineer in me just likes when other engineers get the most out of there engines... I'm in powertrain design in the auto industry right now, and there's a sense of pride when an engine my company designs is top in it's class... and VERY embarrassing when we release a new engine that is less powerful/efficient than an older engine in the same class (usually due to upper managment decisions or lack of funding). To me, this engine seems to now fall in the latter catagory, which is just hard to swallow for me personally, even though it's still plenty powerful from a functional standpoint.

The engine spec for the base model says 100.7kW or 135CV. On straight conversion of kW to hp (multiply by 1.34) you get 134.98hp so the CV and hp values are kinda the same..

However the calculation of the CV value is different.. it also takes into consideration the CO2 emissions and uses a weird formula mentioned below... This unit is used mainly in France and Italy..

CV = (P/40)^1.6 + U/45

where P is the peak power output in kW and U is the CO2 emission in gms/km.

You are partially right.. Cavalli indeed means horse though but CV stands for cavalli vapore i.e. steam horsepower

Ducati says the 2014 Monster 1200 S is equipped with the same breaks as in Panigale.

It's a gorgeous rendition and a breath of fresh air compared to the previous Monster designs (post S2R/S4R modeling), which I found slightly disappointing. The price seems fair for the features and power figures provided. Well done, Ducati.
