Need clarification

Hi guys. Thank you to the admin for making me feel welcome to the forum. I am about to buy a 2009 696 with 21000km on the clock. I have spoken to people and read many overseas forums and I am confused about service intervals. I was told by someone in the SA motorbike industry that the cam belts (is that the right description) must be changed every 12000km or 2 years. The American and UK forums talk of every 12000 miles or 2 years. I am now really confused. Was my buddy confusing miles with km's....or are there different specs for the different countries? And the dumb.... I am planning to buy the bike from, doesn't have a manual as he never asked the first owner about it.

I am super excited about this bike and have already made space for it in my lounge

I Ride: 1199 SL, 1199S Tri, 1299S Anni, MV Agusta F4 750, M1200S, M696, Husaberg FS650e, Petronas FP1
The M696 has a super reliable engine and I wouldn't really care what the salesmen tell you. And forget about this silly 2 year maintenance intervals.
Timing belt replacement interval for this engine is at 24000km/16000mi. At 24000km, you should also check the valves, clean or replace the air filter, give it fresh oil and oil filter and replace the spark plugs.

Just download the Ducati Users Guide from their website, it contains the official maintenance plan.

Ok thank you so much. It means this bike is well within the replacement window. I was so scared to even ride the bike to my house for fear of a complete engine failure. People have got me so paranoid about Ducati motors that MUST be serviced at most every 12000km's that I have been contemplating not buying this bike, but once I saw it and sat on it...and started it...the decision was made. I have to have this bike.
