2009 696 starting issue

Hi guys

My bike refused to start this morning. It was getting fuel cause I could smell it and turned over perfectly but just didn't want to ignite. I went for a ride yesterday, got to my destination and when starting the hot bike 5min later, noticed it didn't start the same. You guys know how we just know the sound of our bikes. Normally when starting it cranks twice and then BANG...its alive. Yesterday it cranked but it was as if the cranking just got faster and faster until the bike was idling. It hard to describe. Then this morning nothing. Smell petrol all over but nothing, not even an attempt to come to life. I left it for the day and after work tried to start it again and it was the same as yesterday. Cranking faster and faster until it was just idling. Not the BANG I am so used to and love so much.

The plugs are around 500km old. As is the oil and fliters. I don't know if it can be the coil. The plug caps. The leads. What else is there? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

How old is your battery?

To be honest its still the factory original. With the ignition on the dash gives me a reading of 12.1. Once the bike idles it runs at around 13.

Wow - roughly 10 years on a factory battery? That's incredible.

My gut tells me it's the battery. Even though the voltage may show good, it sometimes isn't cranking hard enough to get those twins going. My 796 was always finicky until I upgraded all the starting wiring with heavier gauge cables.

Maybe try jump starting with your car to remove all doubt?

If it's not those, you could try replacing the plugs, removing the charcoal canister(which has been linked to hard starts) etc...
Thanks from johanl46

Ok thank you. Funny thing is...now it starts again but I will keep the jump starting suggestion in mind when it happens again. Please excuse my ignorance but what and where is the charcoal canister?

I will replace the battery with the new lithium type as soon as I get a chance.

Yes lithium battery for sure.
South Africa? I wouldn't think you have a charcoal canister installed.

Not sure if SA models have them, it's an emissions control device that is usually removed by end users over here.

Here's a thread discussing it:

O ok. Yes I checked my owners manual when I got home and we don't have that installed here. I am planning to buy the battery tomorrow. If the problem persists then I will give you guys feedback. Thank you so much for your patience and assistance.
Thanks from able duc
