Bike choice advice - 996/998 or 1098/1198

As I said in my intro... I am planning on buying another bike in the spring with my annual bonus, and like to fully research purchases. I'm looking at either a 996/998 or a 1098/1198, mostly for mountain runs, and a few track days. So, I came here for info and maybe a bit of advice. I like the classic 916 styling of the 996/8 bikes a little more, but not enough difference to be a deciding factor. Outright power isn't all that important, but response, tractability, and rideability are. I'm an older, bigger, used-to-be-pretty-fast guy. I'm spoiled on good suspension. Both the Strom and the Hawk have Penske double-clickers and reworked forks, and the TL is up for suspension work soon... so if either series has notably better suspension, that's important. I do have a $10-12k budget to work within, so any R models are gonna be a no-go. I've ridden a 916, 996, and a 1098... but not enough to really have a strong opinion either way. So... anyone who has done a good bit of riding on both series, please chime in.

Bike choice advice - 996/998 or 1098/1198

Iím looking at a 1098. Test rode it and thought it was a brutal beast. I dug it. Really wanna try an 1198. Itís supposed to be meaner yet.
You really have to kink your neck to hold your head up so you can see!

Get the 1198 corse, or something bad ass an R... the 996/998 is a headache of maintenance and without starting a big debate, the reliability is not a strong point.

Iíll admit, the torque/thrust from the 1098 was so impressive. This summer Iíve test rode a lot of bikes (S1000RR, Brutale 1090RR, Fireblade SP1, etc...). On the street, the 1098 was the most impressive. The noise, the acceleration, the aura of a Ducati...
Quite haunting!

Take this for what it's worth. I love my 1098R but if I had to choose between that and my 996R, I would go with the 996R every time. A 996R/998S/998R is a wonderful bike and something that is a joy to own, to ride, and has aged incredibly gracefully.

So what sets the 998(etc) apart from the others?

The 998 was the best version of the 916-family
916 looks with reliability

That's a common myth. The others are reliable too as long as they've been taken care of and no one butchered them during service.

The 996R/998/998S/998R have a really great version of that testastretta motor. It's strong, smooth, torquey and is probably my favorite motor that Ducati ever made. The 05/06 999R also has a great version of that motor but I like the whole 996R/998R package a lot more.
