Between the break-in on the dyno and first oil change, I was only able to get about 50 miles on the clock today. I haven't even tried to tinker with any of the host of rider aid settings. First impressions are overwhelmingly positive. When I first decided to get this bike, I was expecting something that was very uncompromising and track-focused. Something that would feel out of place on the street. I was wrong. While it's not as comfortable as my Tuono or Super Duke 1290, it's considerably more agreeable than my RSV4. The first time you hope on it and lean it from side to side with your feet on the ground, you realize just how low the center of gravity is. The big feels very light. Subjectively, all my other bikes feel considerably heavier. The Ducati is also very narrow around your thighs which improves comfort.
But we don't enjoy bikes when they are standing still so lets move on. Start the bike and it sounds very similar to a 1299 but with a touch more richness to the note. Rev the engine in neutral and it responds like an electric motor. Instantaneous a eager to please. Getting rolling and the first thing that came to my mind is how smooth the transmission and engine is. Everything feels delicate and free of harshness or chatter.
The engine is a gem. More free revving and "lighter" feeling than the v4 in the Tuono or RSV4. Not gruff or barky like the Aprilias which is neither good or bad. Both sound awesome in their own way. If I had to put it in automative terms, it feels like a Mazda rotary in how it revs so freely with no harshness or vibration. It's so pleasant to ride casually or aggressively which is something that I couldn't say about the RSV4 which, by comparison, was only in its element when riding the snot out of it on the nice smooth roads. The Duc, in comparison, has a wider breadth of capabilities no doubt due to the semi active Ohlins. It handles rough and bump roads in a way that I have not experienced before in a superbike. In this respect, it's more similar to my KTM Super Duke but without the general sense of softness.
Power is off the charts. I'm still breaking in the engine so I haven't spent too much time at WOT. But the short bursts I did here and there were nothing short of awe-inspiring. Electronics are invisible. If it wasn't for the yellow light on the dash lighting up, I wouldn't have known the wheel control system was active. The front wheel just lifts off the ground ever-so-slightly through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. I'm sure it would have done the same through 4th but I ran out of road.
Riding somewhat aggressively through my favorite back road that connects Livermore to Danville, the Duc turns into corners with more conviction than any larger displacement bike I've ever ridden. Also surprising is you easy you can dial in more or less lean while already mid-corner. Doesn't seem to require any deliberate counter-steer. It's nearly telepathic in that respect. You look to where you want to go and the bike follows. It's a very easy bike to ride. And the throttle mapping is so nice that the engine never seems to overpower the chassis.
I haven't come close to pushing the bike hard yet. Not something I make a habit of doing when riding solo on the road. I'm sure I'l have more to say once I take it to my next track day on the 12th. I don't think I've ever been so excited about a new bike before. It's a very special motorcycle. And if I'm already impressed by it on the street, it's going to be so much better when i get to ride it in its element on the track.
The burning question: How does it compare to the RSV4? The Duc's electronics seem to be much more sophisticated and transparent to the seat of my pants. In terms of power, there is no comparison. The Duc makes more power everywhere. And it feels more effortless when doing so. The Duc is also more nimble and adjustable mid corner. It also seems much more refined which is something I wasn't expected. What stood out the most is that the V4S isn't an extreme track-only bike that sucks on the road. It isn't an RSV4 turned up to 11. Instead, it's something that is oddly use-able even during mundane rides through traffic. While the back of your right thigh will feel some heat in stop and go traffic, it's nothing compared to the nut roasting you get in an 899/1199/1299. And the seating position is really nice for my 6' tall frame. Whereas on an RSV4, it felt that I was sitting so high and reaching downward to the clip-ons, I feel more comfortable on the Duc with it's more conventional riding position. As for as value goes, is the V4S worth the ~$5k premium over the RSV4 RF? It depends. For a bike which sees a good bit of street use, yes definitely. The Duc is more accessible and comfortable. For a dedicated track bike, the jury is still I have not taken it to the track yet.

Sounds almost perfect I guess..No complaints at all other than subjective looks which go away when your riding it since you can't see it...

I know what you're saying: put all of the "North America Buyers"/"Usa Arrival"/New owner impression threads in one thread so that the whole forum isn't cluttered up with the same conversation over and over that no one can keep track of. I get it. It's just the excitement for a new bike.

FWIW, I went to the launch and I'm going to wait for the V4R or V4SL before I commit to one of these but I really like hearing ownership reports of a brand new bike like this.

Let me break it down for you so that you understand better.

What you’re saying is that starting a new organized discussion about somebody’s excitement towards a new motorcycle, isn’t worthy of a thread? You’re expierenced enough to know that one post can derail any conversation or topic. Much like what we’re doing now. So there’s a million threads about the V4. You’re an adult, have some self restraint and avoid them.

I don't mind V4 chat the bike is new. The forum cost nothing to join. So people will write whatever and sometimes its in the wrong titled topic. Like someone mentioned we dont have to read it if we dont want to.
Any useful ducati superbike talk is good.
What's annoying is when someone asks us to hekp them to decide what bike to buy when they already know what their wallet or credit will allow them to buy. LMAO
