Suggestions for new owner

Hi all,

I just got my V4S today and tomorrow Iím riding from Oakland to Las Vegas then back home at the end of the week. Woohoo! Iíve planned a route that looks like fun and Iíve got the bike scheduled to be serviced in Las Vegas while Iím there.

Iíve got a couple of questions before I go that Iím hoping you can help with:

1. Does the riders seat come off? Reading the manual, it seems that itís just the passenger seat, which seems odd.

2. Related, is there a toolkit on the bike?

3. Using the pin code, is it possible to start the bike without the key? I could do that on my Multistrada but I donít know about the Panigale. The manual was kind of vague.

Lastly, any tips before setting out on a 1200 mile break in ride? Iíve been skimming the manual and will read it more thoroughly at my breakfast stop tomorrow.

Thanks!

Welcome, the bike is a beast.

1. Yes it does.

2. Put the key into the lock on the side of the seat and pull off the cover. You’ll find the tool kit in there, its an Allen key!

3. Not that I know of.

Have fun!

Thanks for the reply! What’s the trick to removing the main seat?

Embarrassingly, yes It's my first bike where you need to unbolt the seat to take it off. But I guess that makes sense if there's not really anything under it.

Thanks!

The rider seat has two 4mm Allen bolts under the back corners. There is no reason to pull the rider seat off as it sits on the tank.

My bike came with a small tool kit but I am not sure where you could store it on the bike.

I have never tried to start with pin code. The key would need to be left on in order to try so not sure if there is a reason to try unless starter button isn’t working.

Your Multi had Keyless ignition and even a little compartment for you to store the key fob.

The purpose of the pin is to bypass the immobilizer and assist you in starting the bike (along with the key) in the even the chip in your key loses its program. In this process you will still need the physical key inserted to unlock the ignition block.

Hope that clears up things.

1200 mile break-in? From brand new?

If you saw the amount of metal shavings that comes out of an engine on the first service you might change your mind. With such a long trip you might want to consider the 20 mile break-in method then change the oil. Thereís a procedure of varied gear pulls and decels that free that excess metal. Many believe the first 20 miles determines a lot. ďDo it right and compression is tight.Ē
Thanks from SixShock

Well, the ship has already sailed on the 20 mile break in option as Iím halfway to Vegas. However, itís definitely not a 1200 mile break in because, as I mentioned, the bike is getting serviced in Vegas.
