I Ride: Some pretty amazing Ducatis

Im sourcing some genuine organic saskatchewan seal skin now for the seat complete with Komodo dragon belly skin inlay and a layered Koa wood seat tray. Should be epically comfy. I may put a wing on the back of the seat just in case. If Ducati chose to have the dealers install the "bat ears", they are for sure going to fall off.
I don't think that anyone thought that Scotman was NOT a beast on two wheels...

Back to the whole thing: I don't like the wings but I'm not going to go fast enough around corners to use them. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be there. The Panigale is the only Ducati SBK to not win a world title in its entire run. Something has to change and the winglets are part of that.

I have posted on here before that I do a fair amount of work in Formula 1. I have posted pictures of some of the front wings and the amount of elements on them. It's inevitable that we were due to get something like that on high performance motorcycles and due to the nature of motorcycles, the change in feel due to aerodynamic aids will be very apparent to the rider. so they're here. Let's see how it goes.

Also, I am the retard who uses the paddle shifters on my M-B S65 land yacht but sold my F-1 transmission Ferraris and only kept the manual transmission ones because that's the experience that puts a smile on my face. A little strange but we all like what we like. So I'll probably stick to my old Ducatis for that very reason. At least until I get so tired of hearing how damn amazing this new V4R is and then I'll probably have to to do some exploration.
Thanks from scotman623

Sherpa23, I agree and thats a valid write up. I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that the addition of tuned airfoil sections that augment aerodynamics is a valid area of development for competitive motor vehicles. The discussion was centered on the validity of the the addition of those aerodynamic devices on street driven vehicles driven or ridden by average operators. We all know that a small % of the Rs or any 99s or V4s ever see track duty much less race duty and even then a very small % of those participants are going to be gain an advantage with the wings so my point was that they are a gimmick in that application especially considering like I said, they could have put some additional pieces on the bike that were actually useful. I just never understood the co-dependency that seems to work so well in psychological marketing like all the stickers, plaques, badges "race inspired"etc that adorn all of the vehicles on the road letting others know what size motor you have in your car. Its all a bit weird. Im giving the S-65 and the fact that you actually have open roads to drive on a pass. In SoCal we have traffic and traffic lights. Many high performance vehicles in a low performance environment. Lastly, I don't think i could use the paddle shifters and drink my coffee at the same time plus, I use the massage chairs to put me to sleep while I drive so there's that as well.

I Ride: '19 V4R on order
I think the point of the discussion has been lost in the need of the modifications from the factory. They need to have these parts like winglets and dry clutch on a production based variant to be able to use them in WSB and other racing. The V4R is not meant for everyone and if you dont want or need these parts then purchase a V4, V4S or Speciale.

Well, all of my bikes get high performance or track use. All of the cars do as well (I do the occasional track driving instruction for my club). Hell, I even take my 15 year old Volvo to the track from time to time. And I do have some great wide open roads and beautiful countryside in which to utilize the aforementioned performance. But yes, your point is valid and high performance stuff in low performance environment is a sad thing.

That said, I would never criticize someone for choosing the most high performance option in spite of being limited to a low performance environment. I mean, we could all be riding mopeds but instead we choose to enrich our lives that that glorious Ducati experience. I could never fault anyone for that. All that I would prefer is that they have the requisite skills to be able to use that performance properly should they ever be in a position to take advantage of it.

Oh why am I even posting an opinion? Maybe its the masochist in me. But hey here it goes during my morning coffee.

Wings, Ailerons, Air Foils what ever your take on them. It can be an interesting topic on anything having to do with racing and not an airplane.

These devices on F1, for the most part destroyed my one beloved sport. Take those away and bring back the big tires and beautiful cars. They have removed the racer and now put the engineer at the forefront of the car being competitive.

Bike with these devices seem like a Pandora box that should have never been opened. Yes, of course they are going to make a difference but we are talking about some of the most talented riders in the world that could not decide if they brought more benefit than hindrance to the sport. And now we have 3 manufactures putting them on our street bikes. I am all for new tech and feel that for the most part it has moved the sport forward. But these wings... I really think they should have stayed on birds, planes and rockets and let us racers race and leave the wing aerodynamicist out of our sport.

Now where exactly did I put my flame suit? I know I left here somewhere.

Best,
