Carbon fiber helmets

So I'm looking at getting a carbon fiber crash helmet. My first obvious choice was the AGV Pista Project 46. Still a bit on the pricey side but my problem is more availability, for size, not the price.

Then I came across this:

Icon Airframe Pro Ghost Carbon Helmet - RevZilla

So has anyone had any dealings with Icon or in fact this actual helmet, is it worth it etc? As it stands, I like it because it is a bit different, possibly get a bit of custom paint on it, who knows. But I know nothing of this manufacturer, build quality etc.

Any help would be great........ or other alternatives etc.
Thanks from Gunny Fitz

Its not Carbon Fibre, but a great helmet nonetheless…Wilkson can vouch for that..

I have an Icon Airmada helmet and love it. The airflow is really good. The comfort liner is very comfortable. I can't really say about the noise because I wear earplugs when I ride. I do not have any experience with the Airframe though. Hope this helps.

Icon is known for selling cheap shit to the mohawk-helmeted crowd. I read a review on lanesplitter not too long ago, though, and think that perhaps this could be my next helmet, too. Let me see if I can find the article.

Yeah, I would hope that their high end Carbon helmet would have better quality and strength?

The airframe pro (standard) got 4 stars in the SHARP motorcycle helmet safety scheme, a UK based test that is known for being quite stringent. A little lacking in side protection, not badly, just in comparison to the front and back.

This is one of those items that you really don't want to make a bad decision on!!

Another light weight carbon helmet you might want to check out is the Shark Racer R Cabon Pro. It weighs in at 1250g which is lighter than the Icon and has a 5 star SHARP rating. Obviously the fit has to come into play on which works best for you. I picked mine up on eBay for just over $500. I use it as my track helmet and love it! If it's good enough for Tom Sykes and Sylvain Guintoli then it's good enough for me!

One of my 5 helmets is the HJC rpha 10 plus carbon helmet that Jorge Lorenzo wears. HJC has really stepped up their helmet game over the years. Not only is this an exceptional helmet but it also looks amazing. Fits great, good ventilation and comfort. Most importantly, super light! I have a Pista GP Soleluna Monster helmet and if I didn't think it was the best looking helmet on t he market, I honestly wouldn't think that helmet is worth almost 3 times the cost of the HJC. I don't care what racer wears what helmet so I'm not a supporter of any particular rider but if it looks great and is great quality, I'm interested. Got mine from championhelmets for about $350 U.S. shipped.

As others have noted, build quality is lacking and association with the the squidlife is rock solid. Should be the other way around. $600 could probably get you a Bell carbon helmet.

I own a 5 year old Akuma phantom 2 carbon helmet with transition lens that is also lighter and more practical than the icon carbon helmet.

I bought the Spies signature HJC when they came out with this model; I've got a certificate he signed. I've bought two more of them and it's still my main track helmet. It is very lightweight, but I've found that on certain bikes it vibrates in the airflow above 110-ish mph, which makes it hard to see. S1000RR with stock screen=fine, same bike with MRA SBK-spec screen=vibration. 1299 with both stock and DP tall screen=fine. It's also not that quiet; earplugs are definitely mandatory. Also, on my head it starts feeling too tight/painful after about an hour of riding.

So my daily helmet is now a Schuberth C3 Pro. With the built in bluetooth, a pair of those cost an arm and a leg (needed one for the wife too). But I have yet to see a need to replace the HJC for trackday use.
