Gas tank venting, anyone know how this works?

So I had my tank pretty topped off with fuel on my 899 and I also have an aftermarket gas cap, bonamici. Recently I trailered my bike to the track and noticed when I got there that the fuel overflow tube had spit up a bunch of fuel all over the trailer from the underside of the bike. I'm guessing from all the jostling but does anyone know how the tube setup works exactly? I guess I don't know how far to fill up the bike to avoid this in the future or if it's normal.

Was it a hot day ? Just expansion? Maybe the venting on the cap is not as good as OEM ?

Glad you mentioned venting. When i changed the cap over the winter, i noticed the oem has some sort of filter piece that makes a rattle sound when you shake it. The new one has nothing like that, just bare bones metal. You think thats the issue? Again, i don't know how the venting and tubing work exactly

Sounds like a typical check valve. That would make sense.

Ok so i looked up check valves and all I see is aftermarket ones they make for dirt bikes. Do I need something like this and install it where the current hose is?And do i need to position it in the upward position instead of down like how the overflow hose is now so it doesn't flood?

OK guys, I need some help here. Even with the tank more than half empty, there's still gas leaking out of the overflow tube during riding. Just completed my first trackday of the season and after every session I had to clean up fuel from the bottom of the bike. Kind of scary because I don't want it to catch fire. I honestly don't know what to do now other than maybe go to the dealership. Any ideas? I'll post some pictures of the tube where the fuel is leaking from.

One of the vent holes under the gas cap might be plugged. You should have a rubber tube under the gas cap setup check to make sure nothing is kinked.
