I Ride: 2012 1199S ABS
Counterpressure going to the apex

Just finishing my 4th season on the track with the '12 1199S. One and half seasons now on Dunlop N-tecs, and I don't ride it on the street any more.

I have been working on corner entry/mid-corner speed. Gradually coming to terms with what the slicks can do, and still making progress.

A question for you all about the cornering technique that seems to be working for me.

I used to establish lean/turn in and then have neutral pressure on the bars, pretty neutral throttle. Seemed like I was loosing time to the faster guys in the middle of the corner (I am about mid pack in group A). Likely slowing because of a little engine braking. So I started adding a little throttle when I got the lean established to maintain speed. My bike, which is stock except for rearsets, wants to stand up when I do that.

So now, once my lean/corner trajectory is established, I open the throttle very slowly and apply a little counter pressure to the bars, not enough to really cause movement or change lean angle, but it seems to keep the bike down and I add a little throttle to not slow further, and maybe very slightly increase speed. Bike seems stable. I come past the apex not hugely but obviously faster and all feels pretty good.

My only other experience on the track is with the S1000RR which seemed easier in mid corner because you could give a little throttle with neutral bar pressure, and it would remain in whatever attitude you had it in.

I am curious about how others get their early Panigales around a corner smoothly and quickly. Be free to critique what I am doing. I would like to know if I am flirting with disaster. thanks, paul

You have a great instructor out in SLC named Scott Rybarik. He is an instructor with YCRS and races a Panigale.

Look him up and he may have some real world input that can be trusted.
