It was a Wednesday mid-afternoon and there really wasn't a car to be seen up there. The roads were relatively clean and smooth. The highly technical twists and turns with elevation changes started to mentally and physically drain me on the second pass as the weather was on the warm side whilst wearing a racing suit. Until.. I saw a sign that point to an "Observatory!" Without cars, it offered a smooth and soft winding path (with just a couple cattle crossings :-p ) with shady trees what provided a rush of cool air and replenishment of relaxation to recharge my spirits for more riding. More shaded trees to the nearby lake and I went back to my camper parked and waiting for me at the nearby casino. The attached pics are from a burial site of a firefighter and one from the lake with cows in the background. Truly a nice visit and hope anyone that reads this also finds some time to make the trip over there.

I brought down two bikes from Denver, the Diavel and 1199. Totally enjoyed lane splitting on the 405 after Mulholland and hope to be back there in December.

Could some of us get together for a nice run up Palomar Mtn. again?
I'm off Xmas week if you're around. Otherwise I'm off weekends and slow idiotic driving cars fill up the road haha. Lemme know. You around then Joe(lftcoast32)? Too bad Thanksgiving week didn't work out.

Sounds good. We will get another ride in soon. We are heading out in a few minutes for todays ride.

The pictures below were taken by a local photographer.

Great Pictures!

We went back to Palomar instead of Borrego Springs. We rode the mountain another 6+ times (up and down) today. Palomar is a great workout for the body, you are constantly shifting your body all over the place. I am feeling it in my legs tonight.
Thanks from RRnold

Leftcoast, sergio, ecobully - I'm in South OC and go through Ortega down to Palomar. I could meet you in Palomar. Let me know when you guys ride during Christmas week. I've got some roads that I would like to ride that week - Palomar, Idyllwild, ACH, GMR, Ojai. Probably won't get to all of them, but these are on the list for that week.

Visited Palomar on 12/6. I saw the photog, but don't have a cool pic because I was slowed as I was working through a bunch of Nortons. Even with the recent rain, Palomar was cleaner than the backside of Ortega.

Yea man. I'll PM you the week before Xmas to touch base. Should have my stock exhaust back from Phil and his coring job to see how loud she can get haha

I'm down for some OC runs too. I could go up there if you know some good roads!
Thanks from leftcoast32

They usually only have the guys out for pictures on Palomar on Sundays now.

We did ACH a few weeks back and anything past the restaurant is probably closed now. They had snowfall and there were a lot of rock slides. We were riding through it off and on the second half. We plan to go back in the spring.

You have to do Montezuma Grade! It is an amazing ride if you like faster really smooth sweepers and some light technical riding.

Sounds good, hopefully we can do a Borrego run or at least Palomar.

That's awesome, I really miss Pally even though NorCal has some fun roads.

We used to do the Hammer's route and I highly recommend if you have the stamina. We would meet up at the Via Rancho Parkway Shell and get breakfast at the Apple Country restaurant in Santa Ysabel. Then continue up through Julian down Banner through Montezuma while loops back around and drops you off by Mesa Grande. Then go up the fast side of Palomar then a few trips up and down the tight side. It was a good 7 hrs of canyon riding.

I remember the original and only photographer there was Kent from Palomarpics.net and used to take some awesome pics. He used to hide up in the trees and in the drainage hole to take pics at random places on the tight side. So every weekend he would post them on Palomarpics. haha

Who's the photographer now? At one point there were like 3 different guys taking pics and handing out their business cards at Mothers.

This one was Kent hiding in the drain circa 2003. Next time you go up, you might see it on one of the tight right hand turns.

We have a similar route that we have been running. I am right off the 15 freeway on Deer Springs/Mountain Meadows. So we are close to everything mentioned.

This is a 200-240 mile ride that takes us all day. We have to refuel the bikes 2 times to complete it. We usually stop in either Santa Isabel or Julian to eat.

We do this route on the weekdays. We try to hit the road at 9am and we are usually back around 4-5pm.

San Marcos to the 76
76 to Palomar
Up the tight side of Palomar
Off the back side of Palomar
Out past the Hideout
Down Borrego and back up a few times
Out through Banner into Julian
Take the 78 from Ramona into Escondido
then back to San Marcos

There are 2 photographers that hang out on the mountain now. 1904 Photography and Rick Clemens. Rick doesn't get on the mountain much any more.
Thanks from RRnold
