Just got off my bike today and noticed a little oil on the right side of my bike. I checked and it looks like it's coming from the rear cylinder. Anyone got any advice or had this happen before?

I had a similar problem last season on my 13' 1199 with about 13000kms. I brought it to the dealer and they found the leak was from the rear vertical valve cover. I replaced the gasket and resealed the valve cover and it's good again. But 2 months later, I had the same issues with the front horizontal valve cover. Therefore, I think you might want to check on that as well. The seal seems to leak at the similar time. I also found that it's a common problem with the 1199.1199 rear leak.jpg

Thank you for the reply! Did you have the dealer do it? Or did you do it yourself?

I had mine fixed at the dealer, but if you're handy with the DIY, the rear valve cover wasn't that difficult to reseal from the research I did back then. The front will be more difficult as the space was very tight, and you'll have to remove the radiator to gain access to it. It's also a good time to replace the spark plugs while you're at it too.
Thank

How much was it to have them done? If you don't mind me asking.

I had the same issue about 6 months ago. The gasket is probably the cheapest part in this bike and only takes about an hour to do. Remove the tank and subframe then you can get to the cover. 5 bolts on the cover and some sealant. Really easy and don't forget some loctite to prevent it coming lose again

Thank you! That makes me feel a lot better. Did you use the Copper sealant spray loctite? I've heard of it but never used it before.

I used Loctite 243, it's got a higher temp rating that doesn't require heat for removal. The next level up requires heating.

The sealant I used was Threebond 1207B. Pretty expensive stuff, but it was all I could get at the time. If you were close by I would offer you a hand and donate some sealant. It's hardly worth buying an entire tube.

That Loctite copper spray isn't the sort of sealant you need. As it's a rubber gasket (don't reuse it though as it's not worth it) you need a bead of sealant around the cam journal cutouts. The gasket does have infills, but the sealant will ensure no leaks. I ran about 10mm across the flat and all along the cylindrical cutout. 5000km and no return of the leak.

I appreciate everything brother! Thank you for all the info. I cleaned everything and rode it around today to see if it was coming out at all. No leaks of any sort. I called the dealer and talked to a tech. He said he sees it all the time with 1199's. He said if it's just a small trace, and it isn't leaking or burning an irregular amount of oil, to just keep an eye on it and ride it. He didn't seem too worried. If it happens again I'll fix them both. I added a little oil today and rode it in the heat. It was fine.

Mine started pretty small and I left it for a few weeks. When I pulled the covers off there was a mess behind it. Just watch out for polling that could end up on the rear wheel. Keeping it clean helps, but like I mentioned it's not a big job and keeps you safe.

Thanks for looking out brother. If I see anymore I'll do it immediately. I might as well do them both at once too.

Hi Disco,
Question, did you run sealant all along/100% of the gasket mating surface? I’m currents in the process of doing mine and I did/completed the hard one(front) so far and I only used sealant on the cam journal straight edge(s) and didn’t use loctite on the 5 valve cover mounting bolts, all per the service manual. Now you have me thinking I did the 1st. one sub-par…. :(

ps: I know, back from the dead!

I put sealant over the entire journal up to 10mm either side. It was still a great seal when I did the valve clearances. I didn't put sealant across the entire flat face, just the cutouts.

Doing low grade Loctite was a security measure to prevent loosening if the torque. From memory I used 242 which is the strongest hold without heat.

If you are gonna use 242 (blue) I have noticed that the new stuff that comes in the smaller tubes does not hold as well as the old liquid 242

I would rather use red and and have to run a bottoming tap down the hole next time I removed than have the bolts loosen up by themselves

Don’t usually need heat to remove m6 bolts no matter what thread locker was used

Yeah the new stuff i was referring to is ‘gel’

Not so swell...

Valve covers should only have to come off once a year at the end of season when motor is getting gone thru tho right? Only takes a few mins to run a tap down the holes. I usually do that whether blue or red was used but to each his own : )
