1199 Superleggera vs 959

Hi, folks. Does anyone have any experience on both a 959 and 1199 Superleggera? I currently have a 959 and am tinkering with the idea of getting an 1199SL.

I do have a little heartburn about going backwards one platform, one generation, however.

Does anyone have any insight on how these two bikes compare? Thank you!

They are not in the same league as each other, one is a production bike for the masses and the other is a genuine special parts machine built to show the world what Ducati can do with carbon fibre and titanium on a streetbike, in terms of performance and quality there is no comparison, the SL is superior

If you want a daily ride, get the 959, it will be easier to live with, cheaper and as quick around a track unless you are an expert rider.

My opinion, the 1199 is pretty much a head down bum up riding and you'll need to rev the 1199 engine.

The 959 has usable torque and a friendly riding position. And less wrist pain.

The SL models are halo products. I don't think one would make a good daily or frequent use bike as replacement parts may be very hard to come by. If you want one as a collector item or to take out occasionally on the weekends I can see adding it to your garage given that you already have a 959. I wouldn't want it to be my only bike though.

Thanks for your thoughtful replies.

This would be a weekend toy and eventually, a Multi will join the garage.

I am surprised to hear the ergonomics and rider triangle is so different between the two. Hmmm…

One question I had relates to the adage about it being more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. I wonder if the 1199SL is just stupid. The 959 already does 80MPH in second gear. Occasionally I will get it to triple digits on quiet backroads. But maybe the 1199SL would be a bit “boring” since I don’t want to lose my license.

Thank you for your help on today’s wordle! I came to browse after I got stuck.

Went from a 959 to a Pani R (both '15 models) and would say the basics are similar though the lightness and power of the 'R are light years away...especially in 3rd gear or higher at high RPMs. Might satisfy your need for something similar but with jaw dropping performance and for far less than SL.

Thanks, Kev. Indeed, I’m interested in feeling the extra lightness relative to the 959. Thanks for this.
