You want reliability, buy a Honda, Yamaha.. no one, and I mean NO ONE, said a Ducati was going to be reliable.

You dont buy a Ducati for its reliability, you buy one IN SPITE of its unreliability (quirks)

Also, buy items you can easily afford to repair, maintain and replace...NOT ones you can ONLY afford to purchase.. LIVE by that rule and no repair or issue EVER will feel like an inconvenience.. Goes for electronics, cars, all items in your life..

(warning: the above rule makes it impossible to "keep up with the Jones's and hard to live the "Ballar" life on FB)

move along..

My friend went from a Honda to a Harley and I gave him a hard time. And I went from a Yamaha to a Ducati, it's not even funny.

Only if you had a see through helmet and people can see the grin on your face when you're kicking up the Quickshifter, priceless!

I'm sure VW/Ducati would love to use that as a slogan; "Buy our bikes in-spite of our poor design and quality assurance." This isn't the 1970s. You shouldn't need to buy a Honda to have a set of mirrors last past 2500 miles.

It's not the money, or paying to play. It's the oil patch on my rear tire from a leaking rocker cover at 7000 miles.

Be offended, but don't be hyperbolic.

The audi/Ducati marriage is just a couple of years old..

Ducati's heritage goes a long way back, decades back . May be its something only old school ducati enthusiasts can understand.

Even the most reliable Machines can have issues, even massive oil leaks. Ever google Acura MDX/Honda Oddyssey issues. One of the most reliable car manufacturer in the world has had thousands of cars/truck with busted transmissions, torque converters and other issues.

If you dislike/regret/resent the machine enough to complain about 15,000 mile worth of misery, drive promptly to your nearest dealer and trade it in for a more fun, reliable and "bullet proof machine".
Once you do that, I expect another thread form you in a few weeks titled "Paid $15,000 for new bike, but it doesn't seem special, has no soul and doesn't do anything spectacular"..

Question is why'd you let it get that bad before you did something about it? And if you let an oil leak go for that long what else are you not doing?

Pretty sure no one here that has had a leaky valve cover would say it goes from fine to spewing oil all over your rear tire in one ride.

Let's start with a top tier forged wheel using a sticker, and go from there.

Well sir i guess you would be disappointed with BST wheels and countless other brands as they all typically use stickers.

Every Marchesini wheel i have owned has, as did the 3 different sets of BST wheels, and a set of OZ wheels. Guess for the money they should be engraved into the wheel and hand painted then clearcoated.

obviously, this is your first Ducati. My thoughts....
- it's spelled Marchesini. you know what you should really care about? the quality and lighter weight of the forged aluminum, and not the sticker that says who made it. I bet your panties would really get into a twist if someone peeled off just the "forged" part of the sticker. Then people would think you just have regular Marchesinis, and not the top-shelf forged versions. Oh, the red-faced shame at Starbucks on Sunday morning!!
- the 15k service is really expensive. But the 18k service on a BMW S1000RR is even more expensive. A timing belt service on my Audi RS6? $7000. wanna own a top-notch sport vehicle? it's not just the cost of purchase, it's the cost of keeping it maintained.
- I've seen so many friends with Kawasakis suffer from oil leak problems, a couple of which led to spun bearings.
- front subframe bolts. buy a wrench, get the torx bit, and tighten it yourself. takes 5 seconds per bolt. I check major fasteners fairly regularly, and in the past month alone I've had the subframe off or rotated upwards a few times to get to stuff.

- mirrors. you've got a point there. you'll never be able to really see out of a Ducati mirror unless you're at a stoplight. Actually, I take that back. The handlebar mounted mirrors on my Multistrada and Monster don't vibrate at any speed and work great. btw, if a mirror is coming loose, there are two bolts that hold in each mirror. Tighten them, and enjoy, well, less vibration than before :p

are you remotely serious with this statement? youre going to get on the guy cause of his complaints. holy .... man you are a ducati drone.
dont get on ducati because of its poor quality control get on the guy that complains about it .

actually the mirrors are a poor design. they are separate from the housing and the vibrations make you not be able to see. the rizoma veloce mirrors work great. again have to go after market to get things right.
ps the mirrors on the hp4 work too. they come from the factory.

Your childish attempt at name calling aside, I was sending him your way. To buy a "Repsol CBR1000RR". LOL

Sometimes .... happens. But bolts coming loose and stickers falling off? Surely you are joking.

Even the mirrors aren't a big deal.

The only true gripes you have are the oil leaks

I would have to agree - the 1299 mirrors look pretty, but are useless. As mentioned before, it's not impossible to have a stable mirror at any speed. BMW all have useful mirrors, and even certain other Ducatis have mirrors that are clear and vibration-free.

Ducati has, in recent years, dramatically improved their quality. Certain features that used to be distinctively Ducati are gone, most notably the dry clutch. Air-cooling is also on its way out. And what are they thinking, designing such motors as the Testastretta 11?? Sacrifice top end and make it smooth and rideable at slow urban speeds???? Easy to modulate wet clutches?? 15,000 mile valve checks?

Three Ducatis in my garage. What lack of reliability have I suffered from? hmm....
- the 796 Monster needed the CO and idle adjusted, and the MAP sensor hoses were cracked. Not a big deal, fixed and done.
- about a month ago the Multistrada's fuel gauge sender went bad - a known issue. Also replaced quickly and for free.
- the 1299 is just 2 months old, 2300 miles. It has stalled a couple times. That's it.

One could say that a Ducati owner who's handy with wrenches will have a more trouble-free bike, because the bike is more meticulously maintained. But that can be said of ANY vehicle.

I had not one problem with my air cooled, dual spark Hypermotard. It reminded me of my RC51 and Honda quality but sounded even better!

My Japanese bikes had as many problems as my 1199. (carcoal can, and turn signal harness only, mines been great) IME, the Panigale is a bit more robust than earlier Ducati's. Then again, my Ducati service department might just be better at their jobs than others.

What did you expect? There are friendlier STREET oriented sportbikes out there.

Only my Suzuki DRZ400 has been bullet proof. But now it's got a stumble if I lug too high of a gear. I might have to look into that. And it's chain, sprockets, and exhaust are completely toast. But that's more of a wear item than anything else.

As for the Panigale mirrors, lightweight items vibrate. Fill the mirrors with foam and lead and you can fix the vibe issues. When you chase "lightweight" hardcore, there's a price to be paid.

We want Ducati to stay in business and be successful ($, not just design). It's been through trying times before and almost went under more than once. It has to be better and continue to get better to survive. Diehards cannot keep a company alive. Reliability problems get old pretty fast for most. Ducati asks a lot for some of their bikes, relative to their competition. I think the Ducati "magic" can wither if it doesn't get better. Its competition is getting better. You can argue the competition doesn't have some of that Ducati "magic" but I don't think there's enough of those customers and Ducati has to keep new customers its been doing a good job of getting. They're the coolest bikes no doubt but most customers will drop problematic bikes. Sportbikes may be the most problematic as a group with the hard lives most will lead. But Ducati, like Harley, is somewhat limited in how they can push design without alienating their core customer base. (I know, I'm a Harley guy too) Can you imagine a Ducati inline 4? We all love the look and sound of the Duc 90 degree V-twin. That rear cylinder is a heat source that can be bothersome but do we want it to go away? We want Ducati to get stronger so we can get better bikes and support. A bigger customer base is good for all of us.

There is a guy on this forum that can help you lead up your Pani. He will even make you lead handle bar plugs. Hey hang on, why don't you just buy a Honda Gold Wing? No vibration issues and the weight should just be about right. :D

I filled my front tire with 7 pounds of ball bearings to dampen all bar vibration. Works great, and no more wheelie problems!
