Hi guys,

I took delivery of my 1299 on Tuesday. Only rode a few times because of the ...... weather. Yesterday I started the bike and went in my house to get dressed. The bike stalled. So I don't think much of it. Went back outside and restarted it. Went back in the house and it stalled again. Weird. I thought. I started once again. After it warmed up I went for a ride. All was normal.

Today went to start the bike for another ride. Started and ran for about one minute. Then it stalled. This time I was standing by the bike. It was as if someone hit the kill switch or turned off the key. Sudden stop. I restarted the bike and went for a ride. Again normal. Came home. Had a drink. Went back out after an hr. Rode for about 10 mins. I was coming to an intersection. All of a sudden bike stalled like some hit the kill switch. Thankfully I was turning and had momentum to get off the road. Wtf? Anyone know of this problem?
After it started again, I went for 2 more rides and the bike runs great.

Anyone else experience this. I stopped by my dealer to let them know. There is no warning lights on on the dash.

What could this be?

This would be a common Panigale problem. Probably all 1199's have experienced this so i don't see why the 1299 wouldn't as well. Typically goes away after the first service. Mine did. Hasn't stalled since. I wouldn't worry about it.

Loose battery connection, or loose ground wire would be my guess.....

Sorry you are having a problem.. Let us know how it works out.

thanks for the help. I will check the battery connections. I am hoping this was a couple isolated incidences and it doesn't do it again.

I will keep you updated.

You shouldn't be starting it and then leaving it to tick over....this is not good for a new motor and Ducati doesn't recommend it..Start and go..that's this best thing to do.....

Hi Steve,

Where did you find this info? Every other bike I have ever owned I warm up before riding.

Thanks

Chad

You guys do as you wish....its not good for the motor to warm up slowly under no load.... I'm not saying rev it hard until it hits operating temp..but starting it and leaving it to idle/warm up ..especially when new... is not ideal....

someone posted a letter from Ducati on this forum a while back stating 25 Sec is the max warm up time.

Thanks Scrapper... I knew I remembered seeing such... But couldnt remember specifics...

I may just hold off another week or so before buying! In all honesty I'm sure its fine. A little kink maybe, but nothing serious. Unless of course you're on the road and in traffic, in which case it's no good.

With modern engines, the best approach is start the engine and ride off right away (within 20 sec or so) but take it easy for the first several miles until the oil and engine components are fully warmed up (which takes longer than the coolant btw, so coolant temps aren't the full story). This is especially true in the case of an engine with monster pistons, even bigger than 500 cc MXer from the good ol days. Cold seizure and piston scuffing was fairly common with those bikes.

Worst possible thing you can do for the engine is idle in your driveway for several minutes and then take off like a bat out of hell, but you see morons do this all the time (with cars as well, even in the dead of winter). Dumb, dumb, dumb...even with a good synthetic that has a low pour point

Idle on a big V twin will never be as smooth as the inline 4s. Don't leave it idling in the driveway and there won't be a stalling issue.

Had mine just over a month and after a good start the bike has started having electrical problems, showing a low battery when the battery is new, the screen flickers, have random warning lights going on and off including abs, dwc, fuel light engine light not to mention others, also getting a intertial warning on the dash, dealer says never seen before and is contacting Ducati direct.Basically I've gone and bought a £17000 paper weight. Don't know where I stand as the bike isn't fit for purpose.

I would hope/assume Ducati will cover this under warranty if it is anything except aftermarket additions or unauthorized work on internals. I doubt "paper weight" will be the end result.

I hope you keep a Battery Tender on it whenever you're not riding. The battery is tiny and starting this big motor drains it quick. It's super easy to hook a trickle charger to this bike without even removing the fairing piece - love it

I have full faith in my dealer, always been excellent in the past, he said it may be quicker to put a new wiring loom in than try to trace the problem, I understand these things happen but it's frustrating having a brand new bike that I can't ride. The bike is hooked up to the Ducati tender/charger so should be ok, even with a low battery light the bike still starts which points to a bad connection or wire somewhere.

Start it, ride it immediately but gently, both tyres and engine will warm up together, waste of time warming up engine to temp before riding, first service sorted many others with this issue, ride hills and load it up in a higher gear, quick full throttle squirts to redline, best break in procedure, just my 2cents worth, don't lose faith on a minor issue.

Wondering if it's really the first service or just stuff Ducati has programmed into the ECU that is no longer in effect beyond 600 mi
