Hey guys,

I am sure this has been discussed before but I can't seem to find the answer in the search department.

Do you guys go full synthetic on your 1st oil change. I have never done that before on any of my other new bikes. I go mineral on the 1st 2. I drop the original at 800kms. Then again at 2000km. And on the 3rd at 3000km (1800 miles) I put full synthetic in.

What's your thoughts? Also, thinking of this for my 1299. Thoughts as well?

Motul 7100.

Motul is fine. I'm an Amsoil guy but all these modern synthetics - with the possible exception of Royal Purple - are very good. Amsoil always beats just about everyone in standardized tests, but the gap has closed. Supposedly V-twins call for higher viscosity, but I'm not sure the rationale, seems like 10w-40 or even 10w-30 would be fine, 20w-50 is too thick in my opinion

I go to synthetic fairly early, after a couple hundred miles. Delays (the last bit of) break-in a little but protects the engine better and gives better overall result in my experience

Dump the factory stuff after couple hundred miles, if not sooner - get the crap out of your engine early

Always do my oil at 100/600/1000 on new bikes. Probably a waste of my money, but it makes me feel better. I use Shell Advance Ultra 4T 15w-50 on my 1199. Just my tarnished .02

$15/qt - hope you get a discount

I'll stick with my $8.50/qt (preferred price) Amsoil, which is every bit as good, if not better

AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil

I pay about 12.60/qt. I do it once a year so I really don't mind the $75 to do the oil change myself.

I've used Amsoil on other bikes. Good stuff. I live 30 minutes from the warehouse in Lancaster, PA. I just go and pick it up.

MOTUL 7100 is fine. I'm a MOTUL guy too and use 300V in my bikes. Dealer told me to use Shell in my 1299, but admitted they use Motorex when not using Shell. So honestly it doesn't make a difference in my opinion which quality brand you use. As far as synthetic use in a new motor I feel they are ok because they are designed to use to use them . Just like cars these days, modern maching has advanced for better tolerances with better metals.

Just my .02 cents; )

Motorex is good stuff.

Livengood (my engine builder/chief) says he only wants Motorex or Motul in his motors. He actually prefers Motorex over Motul. But he knows I like Motul because it glows and smells like bananas. :D

I actually bought the 300v once I got to my dealer. Thanks for the advice. Oil debate will always be a preference no doubt. In all my other bikes I use Kawasaki S4. No troubles ever. It is a great oil as well. Being that this is a Ducati and you guys have owned them before I will take your advice. I will dump the oem oil out around 700 Kms and put the 300v in. My dealer recommended the 7100. Guess they can't ..... if something detonates with using one step higher 300v. Right?

My only concern again, is going to full synthetic right away. But like you mentioned as well. This isn't 1985 anymore. Tolerances and engine material have come along way.

Thanks guys.

Chad

What's the issue with Royal Purple?

what weight amsoil for this thing? Didn't ducati go down to a 10/40 requirement now instead of the 20/50?

Ducati recommends the Shell Ultra 15w-50, but I've ran 10w-40 in this bike with no issues. I'm currently running Castrol Power RS 10w-50, most recommend slightly higher viscosity because of transmission shear forces
