1299 quick screen fitting

Hi
This morning I took my bike to Hathaway Transport to have my bike shipped to Estoril. Due to new EU regs trucks can be taller than 4m so the stillages are shorter meaning we have to take the screens off.

So my advice is if you are a Panigale owner ask for an orange stillage which doesn't require the screen to come off.

On to my question. In removing my screen, most of my well nuts fell out and are now in the fairing somewhere. I will buy a new set to take with me.

Any tips on fitting a screen quickly without removing the front fairing. Time will be tight and I don't want to miss the first session so any advice on how to do it would be great. Or am I best just pulling the front fairing off and then fitting the screen.

There is no shortcut. You can attempt to do it without removing the front fairing but you'll end up removing it.

You could attempt to just remove the mirror bolts, and the bolt along the top of the front fairing but you'll need to put a lot of flex on the fairing to get down in there for the bottom ones. I've found this bike to be a lot more complicated to work on than Jap bikes for sure.

I was pretty sure that would be the answer.

I just have to hope they put the fast group out first to buy me some extra time. Will get a couple of mates to help me out with it.

I always skip the first sessions in the morning... Generally some dew on the track, track is always cold, at-least 2-3 goof balls out there letting their nerves get the best of them. By the end of the day people start to peel with 2-3 sessions left and thats when you get the cleanest, warmest track you could ask for.

the well nuts fall in an area on top of the lights they dont actually fall in the lights. maybe able to get them out if you can actually see them. they dont rattle around and they arent noticeable that they are in there.

if you have some forceps you may be able to do it without taking off the fairing. its very difficult and you may ruin the well nuts as you have to squeeze them tight and screw in the bolt.

good luck and its worth a shot but dont be surprised if you have to buy new well nuts and take off the front.

the first time i took off the front it took me over an hour. now that i know where everything is and what needs to be done i can do it in about 30 min.

my advice just take off the front.

Agreed with Mark here. First time I took off the nose fairing it took some time as I kept referring to the shop manual for each step. It came off pretty quick this weekend as I already new the process. Just a little tedious. The side fairings only take a couple of minutes per side.

almost forgot dont yank anything mine wouldnt come off the first time because things were zip tied to it. also there is that piece in the center that goes into the grommet dont break that off. once off just spray some wd40 on it and it will slide right into place.

make sure you unscrew the right screw that holds the fairing in place there are 2 or 3 in the same spot the other one controls the lights.

i cant think of anything else.

Buy a new set of the windscreen well nuts and insert them in the new screen ( then super glue them to the screen so they will stay put when you put the screws through them.... Then you can just take the mirrors off to get enough slack in the upper fairing to carefully slide the screen in and get the screws started in the lower nuts.. It works if you are careful (and you don't have to take the whole front end apart ....)

My top man at Snells has a new set of well nuts and bolts packed in his bag for me. The plan is to get to the track early, get set up then the two or maybe three of us get stuck into it. One each side and one doing the underside.

We have talked about glueing the well nuts.

At the moment it has the track fairings on. I know that the current fairing design is driven by weight saving, but I would be happy with them being a couple of kg heavier if it meant they were more rigid and easier to install. They have gone backwards since the 916/999 designs. Those bikes can be stripped of all bodywork in 15-20 minutes.
