Yeah bloody tight ... Went to get new tyres and they commented about the rear wheel nut !

Thanks all for the very creative suggestions.

I like the idea of a heat gun but concerned about damaging the paint on the wheel...I know you suggested heating for 10 mins, but do I heat it at a setting of 70 degree celcius or higher ?

No no not 10 minutes a few minutes.. And it will not hurt the wheel finish at all.. I use the high setting for a few(2-3) minutes

Removed my rear wheel this afternoon and it took me less than 15sec with my Dewalt careless 20v:D

I have never had any problems with the rear wheel nut, but that's because, having read the problems others have had, I bought:
- air impact wrench, rated to 800lb/ft IIRC
- Speedymoto STEEL socket.
- torque wrench capable of measuring up to 250lb/ft

impact wrench just hammers away - all I do is hold the trigger and keep it steady. Nut pops right off.

When attaching, my wife sits on the bike and presses the rear brake. I then torque that nut up to 170lb/ft. Done.

The right tools make it an easy job. So glad I invested in these tools today. You don't even have to hold the wheel on the stand, amazing.

This 18volt impact wrench is rated 180nm but it loosened the rear nut after the third try of 10 seconds each.

55mm socket from truck tools store R500.
Impact wrench R2700, returning it cause you think the contents were stolen only to figure out at the second store you are supposed to buy the battery and charger separate... Priceless.

So the battery and charger adds another R2500. Converter for 1/2 inch drive to 3/4 inch drive R150. Total at R5850.

So these rand figures mean nothing to the rest of the world, so if you want to check the cost let's use the Mc Donalds money standard but in ducati terms. These tools cost me 2,5% of what the bike cost me.

DeWalt DW292 and SpeedyMoto socket spins it off very nicely.

When I bought my Panigale, I gave my 1098 to my Son, 600 miles away. First thing I did was buy him the SpeedyMoto socket and one of these impact wrenches.

Get the battery powered hand-held impact gun. I bought a Milwaukee. Get the speedymoto axle nut socket.

At Roebling Road in March for the WERA Nationals, I was dreading changing my tires. I had the huge torque wrench, the breaker bar, etc. I ate my Wheaties and got ready. James, the Pirelli guy, said just bring the bike to me. I said OK. He used a hand held impact gun, made by Snap-On, while I sat on the bike and the sprocket nut came right off. No fuss no muss. I was stupefied!

Needless to say, when I got home, I got on the internet and ordered the Milwaukee. I really researched the different impact guns. I love my 1299S but I will admit it takes a gorilla to get that rear axle nut off. I can't say it enough...get a hand held impact gun (that uses a battery pack that clips in to the bottom).

Peace. Highside49

yea after breaking two breaker bars over the years the impact gun is a must if you change tires often.

Breaker bar does it just fine for me.

The tire guy at the track couldn't get a nut off with his electric impact. Loaned him my breaker bar. No luck. I told him I could do the tire change for him with the wheel on the bike, he declined.

I wonder if he ever got it off.

Easy enough by myself with the socket, breaker bar and 4' pipe used as extension of the breaker bar. Socket on nut, breaker bar on socket, pipe over end of breaker bar, step on rear brake, apply steady upward pressure on the pipe and the nut will come loose. No heat, no power tools, no help. Easy enough.

I've had good luck with the Speedymoto steel socket, 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 3' pipe. Except for last time around...

So I picked-up an Ingersol Rand 231-c impact gun and hooked up to an atlas copco compressor we run at the studio. Took that ...... wheel nut to school I did.
