All, I see a few 1299SL's for sale on CycleTrader in Los Angeles with the triple tree stamped ".../500".

Any idea what this is about? Preproduction bikes ?

Demo bikes that were used for promotion before official launch. Some dealers end up with those and now are selling them

Someone on here has an ... 1299SL. He bought it new with no miles on it. Not sure what's different about it. If it's cheaper, and someone wants a 1299SL, I don't see why they wouldn't buy it.

It's about 7-8 bhp less without a number........ :D

Well don't tell anyone but I got from a reliable source that they're down 30-40 bhp so that the press guys who rode them wouldn't kill themselves and could write glowingly about amazing they are that they could ride such a powerful bike so well. :D

"Ducati made a masterpieces that just does everything well and is so well sorted out of the box. It's very easy to ride fast."

I thought they went the Ferrari route and specially tuned the bikes/used sticky tires :D

Is this the same for the 1199SL's. Seen one on cycle trader that doesn't have any number stamped on the triple tree. I am guessing this is a Demo bike also.

I’ve got a ... 1299SL it’s not a demo or journalist bike but a factory bike of which they made eight. It’s zero miles unregistered- I’m in two minds whether to register it or not as I’m hoping that it is an investment.
The pic is of the bike before it left the factory 33799D0D-223C-4794-8D5D-4D10DB546374.jpeg

Ref pic of ..., Interesting doesn’t have the plate on the engine cover with the signature of the dude who set up the valve timing, register it and ride it like a ......., I ride mine but its a pig on the roads, but I got full carbon bodywork and will try to put on a SL V4 swing arm slider. Also will put on Pierbon wings, problem is even euro4 system is too loud for most tracks

Dealers tend to present those bikes in a way to entice clients to purchase them. I’ve heard “opportunity bike” and other such names. You will want to look at it prior to purchasing. While it may seem like a great deal, and have some after market desirable bits, the paint may be covered in swirl marks and there may be chips other places. Just because the bike was used for press releases, or ridden by Ducati company members, doesn’t mean they went easy on it and didn’t just treat it like any bike with a lot of power.

my ... is brand new not for the Press or shows - it has a race allocated frame with no VIN so to register will require a little work - I have a VIN from DVLA now allocated so it simply requires an inspection.
I suppose that I was asking whether collectors would prefer a bike direct from the Factory without any registering etc from me.
on the other points: I hear what you’re saying- it’s the same with most collecting versus using stuff - There were only eight of these ... bikes made so they are more rare than the 500.
