I'm curious as to what the similarities and differences are for both tanks. Is one simply aluminum and the other steel and they are otherwise the same. Why would ducati even bother making a steel tank as well as an aluminum one when it seems like buying more aluminum tanks would be cheaper in the long run than the savings a steel tank would afford ( although I'm not a bean counter)?

Maybe something to do with only putting aluminum tanks on their Premium bikes. It used to be only the R got aluminum. Actual price difference, I have no idea.

I've actually thinking of swapping my steel 959 tank to the 1299/r tank

Weight savings are about a pound to 1.5 lbs

Yep bragging rights and 10mph faster and 20 seconds faster lap times. I'm all for it. :p

Rear mounts are different between the 899/959 & 1199/1299 tanks

You going to have to get a rear mount setup off the 1299 and custom fit it to the 959 rear subframe. Has been done thou...

I did this, but only because I was changing the subframe to a racing one. If I hadn't been I don't know that I would have bothered.

You can machine a mounting bracket fairly easily if you want to have a subframe and tank that don't match though.

I have a 1299 so I don't need to change. I was curious about replacements in the event of a crash.
