Just a quick reflection. Base 1299 vs 959. Everybody says how good the 959 Showa is compared to the base Marzocchi's. Exactly the opposite. The base suspension on the 1299 blows the 959 away. Same rider and same road. No forged wheels. Back to back rides. Granted the 1299 had the SC's and the 959 had the PRC's. But suspension is better on the 1299. I was impressed after hearing all the stories on how good the Ohlins are. Better compliance and feel with stock springs.:)

Haven't heard about the suspension crappin out on the 1299 but hopefully that means they fixed the known issue they had on the 1199. It was great when it actually worked but it certainly didn't last long and was just a crap shoot. I would much rather have consistency/reliability in a components performance over the improvement in a particular parts performance since the difference between the two won't make an ounce of difference for most riders including myself. That being said, I went n dished out the $2k for for the Ohlins forks n have been problem free since.

Agree, I had a 899 and a 1199. I hated the front end on the 1199. Couldn't get it setup at all. Always a compromise setting. That's why I was so pleased with the 1299 feeling over bumps leaned over at speed.

as much as the two bikes look similar . they are not.

I'm sure with the right setup a 959 is a wicked bike , but I wouldn't expect the two bikes to behave the same if they had identical suspension.

wonder how much of this liking the 1299 vs 959 is geometry/design/engineering and motor.

no offense to the op just throwing this out there for discussion.

While I don't know what was done to set up the suspensions on both bikes for the OP, I will throw this out there. Unless both bikes were set up specifically for the rider, and tested with different settings by the same rider -tweaking them over a period of time, I don't know how you can say one is better than the other. You can't just take the two bikes and turn the screws the same number of turns and say they are set up the same.

Did that. Spent the whole day riding both.

On a small tight track with more bends 959 would beat the 1299

On a bigger track with long stretches the 1299 would be quicker but not by much

On the street it's a wash who's going to top out at 200mph

0-60 959 is quicker than a 1299

100-200 1299 is quicker

98% of these bikes are rarely track driven

I rode a 959 and 1299S back to back. Can't say one was better than other except I could feel the weight of the rims. 959 had a better low/mid punch but I preferred the 1299's power delivery. And that's all I got to say about that.

I think you got it backwards. 1299 has the low and mid range advantage.

I've replaced my 959 front forks and springs with ohlins and I'd say it handles better on track than the 1299s with electronics however on the road I would say the s has the advantage.

When I drove the 899/1199/959/1299 they all have different charteristics.

1199/1299 have more power

1199/1299 handle better with stock springs vs 899/959

Its nice to have the adjustment of the electronics

Every rider has his own preference and different driving capability.

98% of riders here have never been to a track and will probaly never use the full potential of any motorcycle.

Don't know what it was, but the 959 had a punch and felt like it ran out of stream. 1299 never ran out. Perhaps it was throttle response. Just know what I felt.
