coming south from san francisco, after lane splitting abit say 15 to 20 mph freeway then begins to open up,going about 60 to 70 mph the bike completely shuts off!!!!!!!thought maybe i hit the ignition switch by accident.scroll the button shut off down and up and press.nope no start!!im in the passing lane with no shoulder.made it across 4 lanes of traffic with a dead bike.time for an ice cold beer!!!!!!light on the dash was "DES"called dealer and he wasnt sure why "des" would cause bike to stall and not start.getting towed to dealer tomorrow.anyone else have there 1299 s "die" at speed?did not hit anything or nothing out the ordinary here.will keep all posted

I have run out of petrol twice. But that's it. Also happened the wrong side of four lanes once.... Not fun.

damn that sounds dangerous man! In for update for this. btw im in bay area too lets meet up!

Check the connections on the battery, if the dealer installed the battery and the vibration from the bike loosened them that would cause this due to computer reading a voltage drop on the battery.

If everything is snug have the dealer check and replace the battery. This happened to a friend of mine with his 90th 1299, on the highway also.

just a quick note, thank you for all the replys.bike is still at the dealer and no word yet what was wrong.did not get a chance to check battery connection before it got towed, but after turn key off and on the start up screen does come on but will not even turn over or even get the starter to kick.many lights on dash flashing.when i get my bike back, yes we should meet up.

This is the "xmas tree affect"

This is the BBS, or black box system. It is typically caused by moister in your bbs system under the seat. I had this happen but it did not die on me. With disconnecting it, updating the ecu, and insuring its cleaned, dry aqnd using electrical cleaner and sealant, it is perfect.

Any moisture encounters recently?

I am now praying we will never have issues with our bikes :( sorry to hear about your plight :(

The more i come to this forum the more stories i see online with regards to the reliability of our bikes.

Keep in mind that not nearly as many people post about the good as the post about the bad. I use the forums more as a problem solving tool than a survey among all owners about their experience.

Still, i am hoping to hear of a good outcome on this one!

True - hopefully we will have better luck as well because we don't ride like street Rossi :) not saying that others are having bad luck because they ride hard but these bikes were made to ride hard ...

dealer called today.there speaking with ducati for assistance because of the numerous codes and they have not had a problem like this with the 1299 series bikes.fingers crossed i get good news soon.......

I have had similar problems with my 1299S from day one. Mine suddenly dies on me going around intersections or when I just start taking off in a parking lot...Sometimes right after it starts up and is idling for about 2 minutes.. Engine hot or cold makes no difference...? I have given up riding it for the most part since it will never be right and runs terrible around town at anything under 6000 RPM. It is just not fun anymore..Wish I had never bought the damn thing.. I am very disillusioned with the Ducati brand now.. I could have got a brand new R1 and a Brand new ZX10 for what I have tied up on on my 1299S
It is a beautiful bike and looks great sitting there but when you fire it up and try to ride it you suddenly loose your enthusiasm. It will buck and kick and runs real rough unless I have the RPM over about 5000 to 6500 rpm..(It changes from day to day) Some days it is a little smoother for a while then it will suddenly start acting up again.. No rhyme or reason to it... I have ridden others new 1299S models and a couple of brand new demonstrators at the dealer and none of them has the same problem as mine.. I simply got a real lemon...Hope your is not like mine...
If yours has the same issues as mine ( I hope not) you might as well get used to it because unless it is throwing a code (mine does not) they have NO IDEA what is causing it..(or maybe they know but just don't want to admit it) The Ducati rep has NO CLUE either.. I am positive that it is in the electronics somewhere..No one has been able to figure it our through since it doesn't throw any codes...
I have had mine in the shop countless times in the last year trying to get it fixed. The dealer has tried many things including changing out the ECU, the complete throttle body assemble, and even the throttle unit on the handlebar, (Also resetting the programs in the ECU and ABS module etc). I even purchased the Ducati Akropovic titanium slip on's to get the factory "Up Map" along with the Sprint filter. $3500 later no difference.. I even added the Rapid Bike Racing unit and that made it run stronger overall but does not cure the stalling or running rough issues on the lower RPM's With or without the Rapid Bike unit installed ti makes no difference..It is definitely something wrong with the bike itself.. Oh yeah I also had SAMCO hoses installed and had the dealer degree the cams back to exact factory specs... NO difference...!
NOTHING has fixed it from running terrible at anything below 12% throttle or the issue of suddenly dying on me. It is a real eye opener when it suddenly goes dead in the middle of turning in an intersection..:eek: Good luck to you man..!
I have more or less given up trying to get it fixed.. Maybe I will clean it up and just put in in my living room as a piece of art LOL... Beautiful... but a total ..... to deal with.. Like some old girl friends I used to date LOL

I've not personally experienced it, but I've read on this forum that contacting Ducati Italy will then have the effect of getting Ducati USA to be more responsive.
Good luck.

ok....warranty work is done.turns out to be melted wires on the lambda sond sensor.the bike went into complete shutdown to save itself i was told.only got to ride it home from work but seemed to be ok.hope this is the only hiccup for awhile.thank you all for your comments.was a day away from contacting ducati for taking so long to figure out the problem.but must say i love this bike!!!!back to the commute next week but between my 848 and riding the 1299s is like night and day.ok bay area guys lets ride....

I wish I was lucky enough for them to just find melted wires LOL...

MY bikes has been the shop at least 15 times since I bought it... My issues is somewhere in the wiring harness/can bus or some black box somewhere..

Until they find it, it doesn't matter how simple or how complicated it is it still runs like ......

15 times? You either really like going to the dealer, seriously love uncertainty or you really hate Lemon Laws. Or all three. Call a lawyer.
