So I have a 1299s and recently it just began shutting off completely with no lights even while coming to a stop or while idling. It happens very random. So I had my dealer check it out and they said they had another 1299s with the same issue so they had a ducati tech tell them its most likely the downshift function thats causing cpu errors when its not really being used. They reset all the peremeters and I turned downshift off keeping upshift only and problem hasnt returned. So for anyone with this issue go with this solution first and see what happens. Battery was good to go with no issues according to them.

'not really being used'?
Hmm, i use the ds regularly so does that mean it shouldn't happen? weird. are they working on it? is it a software bug?
I don't like having to turn off a function to avoid bugs.

Good luck hope it doesn't return

I had this happen to me once at a stop sign. Took about a minute for it to fire back up.

Removed the charcoal canister and hasn't happened since.

I was told by my dealer ducati told them it could be a software bug and no news or update on if they will or are working on it. I do use it at times (downshift), but I guess its confused when you have the clutch pulled in and ur downshifting or in a gear coming to a stop. No idea but its wack. Im hoping they have an update next summer since it is a big feature for the 1299s.

This is most likely because you had the fuel tank over filled and some fuel went into the canister. Thats another issue we have to deal with. But my bike didnt take a minute or a second longer to fire up. I was able to get it running as soon as I hit the start button.

This is a VERY common problem with several models in the Ducati line up. My 1299S has done it on and off since it was brand new. Dealers are aware of the problem but evidently they cannot fix it. Ducati factory has never come out with a fix so just get used to it. Mine usually only dies when it has just been running for a short time. **Once it did die on me in the middle of a turn at an intersection:eek: That was LOTS OF FUN. LOL. Another time it died on me in the middle if 70mph traffic here in Austin. Now that is scary.
My bike is currently in the shop again and this time they are replacing the entire throttle body assembly to fix another throttle sticking issue I have had since new.
I hope this will fix it once and for all.

The motor suddenly shutting off is a mostly intermittent problem and seems to get better with more miles on it but I seriously doubt it is caused by the shift sensor. If that is the case then Ducati probably would have issued a bulletin and or recall by now. I have read that some 1199 owners have the same issue and also some Hypermotards. Don't think for a minute that the dealers don't know it is an issue..

Remove the charcoal canister ASAP. My 1199 and Hyper did this. After removal hasn't happened again.

Yea mine was like that. Funny thing is the dealer told me about it as he was going over the bike before I left. He mentioned sometimes it will slip out of the gear right when your QS finishes putting it in that gear, he also mentioned sometimes it will randomly shut off don't worry about it... Etc etc... At first I didn't care about anything negative he said because I was just so amped to go! But having to go into neutral just to start the damn thing back up is a hassle sometimes... And it doesn't like to start up in a roll... So it's just a pain when it dies at stupid times, but luckily from the past few times it's only been happening when I'm at a slow speed and I go for the clutch to go neutral to turn the Bike off... So I'm like eh... It knows it's home lol. (It now typically only happens right as I'm about to park at home) but it's about 1-3 times a week out of 20-25 times I start the bike back up so again I can live with that lol

Happens some times with street riding, never on track yet. It cuts out at red lights. Just have to push the bike out of traffic and wait about 5 mins. But i can understand her, bored to the bones..

So you can live with it huh? If it dies on you in the middle of traffic some day at the wrong time and place you might not LIVE at all!

Get ready another rant!!!

These are EXPENSIVE top of the line motorcycles WE SHOULD NOT HAVE TO "LIVE WITH IT" The Ducati factory knows about this issue and does NOTHING to fix it. This will be my first and LAST Ducati... It simply isn't worth all the ......... Sure it is a Beautiful exotic bike but it's just not worth the money when you have to put up will all it's problems..
There are other bikes out there that will outrun it and outlast it (without near the upkeep cost and problems) My friends that have new BMW's and new R1's are laughing at me for spending so much money and no being able to ride with them.. For what I have invested in this one bike I could have literally bought two new R1's!

I can't imaging what it would cost me to keep mine running if it didn't have a warranty.. Maybe the older less complex models were better but from what I have experienced with mine (and what I have read from others) with 1199 and 1299's there is absolutely NO excuse for ANYONE to have to worry about their bike dying on them while they are riding in traffic and having to push their bike to the side of the road!!!!!!
If it was an old BSA or Triumph from the 60's with LUCAS Electronics I could understand it, but this is a new 2015 $25K+ $$$ motorcycle. Ducati better get their .... together or they are going to have a bad rep like they used to regarding upkeep.. Word gets out quick nowadays with all the social media..
They advertise longer service intervals for valve changes however they do not tell you that if you are one of the unlucky ones like me ( and many others evidently) you will have your bike in the shop over and over all the time..
The dealer has been great and they have done all they can but evidently they don't really know how to fix it. All they can do at this point is start replacing components.. . I usually have to drop the bike off and then leave it there about a week until the "Factory Rep" makes his way back to them and looks at it again.. They have already switched out a brand new factory ECU, of cours e changed settings on the throttle bodies etc Tried to remap the ECU (which made the factory warranty null and void according to the factory rep) That is why the dealer had to pay $1500 for a new ECU.. STILL NO change.. It still has the throttle sticking in first gear and still dies on me..
Now they are taking a complete throttle body off a new bike and installing it on mine to see if that is it.. Of course the bike has been there in the dealership's shop since last Tuesday and they haven't finished it yet.. it is always on the back burner... (They got to get the new bikes they just sold ready to deliver first you know..)
Their mechanic does not want to see me come in anymore.. I am sure he is tired o screwing with it.
The day I picked it up from having the new ECU installed and it died on me in the middle of 70mph traffic going home.....**If you live in the Austin area and ride on HWY 35 during rush hour then you know how scary that is..
If I don't get my bike running correctly soon I am going to file a lawsuit under the lemon law and either get my money back or another bike.. My bike has spent more weekends in the shop than In my garage at home.. I purchased mine last April and the first day I rode it, it died on me leaving the dealership! I wasn't even a block away from the dealer and I had to coast over to the side of the road and restart it.

Even if I get it fixed I will not keep it past the warranty period I just do not have any confidence in it anymore.

Sorry to be such sour grapes but I am fed up... You out there that don't have problems are VERY lucky that you get to enjoy your bike..

my pani did this as well, and it didnt have the charcoal canister... itz actually quite dangerous, esp in manhattan traffic....

I agree with you Speedy. Even though I don't have the issue's like you my bike has shut off twice on me. Both in bad spot's. Almost just dropped it on the ground and let everyone drive over it.
Have had 12 new bikes and none of them have ever stalled or have drivability issue's like this.

None of those issues will ruin Ducati sales. If anything, sales have improved as a brand and will continue to do so as their lineup grows as well. While these issues may distance a few current owners from the brand, the majority of owners (even ones who experience the same problems and even more) will continue to be future model owners, including myself...and I'm not even brand loyal either. Doubt any manufacturer will make a bike that looks as sexy as ducati superbikes and for me personally, that alone is worth dealing with some random troubles here and there. Allday everyday!

Had it about three times on the first 1199 during break-in period, and maybe once per year in street traffic. It's annoying when cornering in traffic to quickly react and stomp a foot down, but easy to live with it.

From an engineer's standpoint I fully understand why it happens (low rotational mass, low idle RPM, lean fuel mixture, making a bike compliant to all this environmental laws etc.).

My attitude is to say to myself that this bike's behaviour is a sign of a characterful two cylinder italian diva. So, when such stall happens once a year, I just start smiling and push the bike out of the traffic, take of my helmet and smoke a cigarette. Get's me a chance to have very nice talks to amazed pedestrians :)

EDIT: Stalling only happened while start driving (0-5 mph), never at higher speeds.

If the bike stalls while riding at high speeds, say 60mph and you dont have the clutch in, what would happen? Im assuming the wheels will lock and send you flying?

I assume this because when you have a bike in gear it doesnt move front or back. And Speedy14 is right, paid 31k but not worth the 31k. My next bike wont be a ducati either, most likely back to aprilia or perhaps just a upright japanese bike.

Well...No it doesn't throw you over the handlebars. It just acts like you chopped the throttle all the way off and slows down pretty fast.. Not as big a deal at 30 -45mph but it IS a big deal in fast heavy traffic when you have nowhere to go ie; just basically coasting and trying your best not to get rammed by some truck while you limp over to the shoulder (if there is one) ..

It can also be an issue if you are cornering and the motor dies because then the suspension unloads and you can run wide..

Spedy

I had it happen once at stop and go traffic speed during break in, but my fuel level was very low and didn't happen after I refilled it.

Happened again about a month ago downshifting from 3rd @ ~50mph.

wow you speak the truth yet when i use to say this with the 1199 i got flamed badly. you mentioned the bmw and r1 two huge no no on this forum good luck to you my friend . my 1199 had numerous problems and all people do is make excuses for the brand. anyway my bike finally works perfect (knock on wood) all the bugs out i love it but the bmw is better.

Hi

This happened to me yesterday and I disagree it was nothing to do with rotational mass, as soon as I downshifted to 1st using the QS it cut out....it didn't stall it physically cut out.

It restarted instantly on the button and this was the first time it had happened to me. ( yes I have stalled it before )
