Just wondering if the 1299's are smoking. I know when the 1199 came out, lot of people were concerned because there was quite a bit of smoke until they got broken in. I'm curious to see if it's still like that for the 1299.

New owners please chime in.

Thank you.

Is it oil?

Or is it the new exhaust getting really hot for the first time?

I'm pretty sure it was oil, that's what it was on the 1199's. Until the rings got seated in at least. Some did some had nothing.

Not a trace ever.. Nada, zilch, completely smoke free since mile 4 when I picked it up from the dealers.. I now have 1,173 miles on it.

Don't bother using the search function on this forum, you might actually find answers. Hey, while we're at it, what kind of oil should you use...?

Mine did at the dealer when I first picked it up and a couple of times since. The dealership told me it would for awhile. I'm at about 200 miles and it seems to have stopped. Having come from a 1098 I wasn't aware of the issue until they told me about it and I was a little concerned but after reading about it, seems to be normal. I'm going to watch oil consumption closely during the warranty period and take it in for anything that seems out of the norm.

I had the tank bubbles on my 1098 that I wasn't very proactive about, so I'm not going to mess around with this one. It's going straight to the shop at the first sign of trouble.

Thanks for the tip sprinkles! Pretty sure I have seen the discussion yet on the 1299.

Mine has smoked a bit... I don't have experience with the amount of the 1199, but it definitely smokes more than other I4s on start up. I have very little Kms. I will advise when/if it stops

I wonder if this could be something related to getting the engine and exhaust up to a certain temperature for X amount of time?

When I picked my bike up, I rode 170+ miles in one shot, stopping only once for gas in the middle, then took a 20 minute break for coffe and a snack, then turned around and did the reverse journey; that obviously allowed the engine and exhaust to get up to temperature, go through a few cycles, stabilize, get hot, get cool and generally break in.

Just a thought.

My 1199 would still smoke on start after 12,000 miles, particularly if cold or it hadn't been run for a while.

Seen nothing on the 1299.

if you "break in" a bike droning down the freeway, that's an excellent way to get a oil guzzler

Stay off the freeways

After my first oil change with my 1199 I didn't notice any more smoke on start up.

One thing they might have fixed is the hard start or shut off. I haven't experienced it yet with the 1299.
