Just changed my front sprocket to a 14 tooth, vs. the 15 tooth stock and am very happy with the improvement!

Admittedly, my commute the last few days has been in Monsoon-like rain, but still...

The way I see it, the 1299 is geared to do 199 mph at redline in 6th (as per gearing commander's charts) and that's what kills our 6th gear drive; quite frankly, as good as the lower 5 gears are, 6th SUCKS!

The change will be a real improvement for my local race track (Thunderhill Raceway) and allow me to be in a better part of the rev range for turns 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 the chicane and the drive out of the final turn at 15.

It will also help me on my commute, where 6th is now FAR more usable. I am wondering if I might actually IMPROVE my gas mileage, because now I can stay in 6th for a lot longer on my way to work.

Cheap mod to do, with big bang for the buck.

Cheers.

I doubt it's geared for 199mph as I hit 301 kmh this year and I was into redline but not at the end of it. Might do 192-4. But I don't think 199 is possible even on a Dyno.

That must be a torq monster now. How many miles do you have on yours now shilling?

I guess the Gearing Commander information must be off. Does anyone know the correct speed/gearing figure???

Here's the Gearing Commander figures for stock at 11,500 rpm.

I am at around 8,700 miles at the moment; didn't ride the bike for 1 1/2 weeks due to my dealership screwing up my tyre order. They got my new tyre, just in time for our recent deluge.

I mean you could be right, I would like to how this as well now. Is our end of redline 11,5?

What did it show on your Dyno when you got it done. I haven't ridden my bike in 2 good months so I can't remember lol.

On the Dyno, my reline was at 11,500 rpm, so yes, for the 1299 it's 11,500 rpm... For the 2015 1199R, it is 12,000 rpm, but the R has different gearing.

And YES, the bike wants to wheelie more, but all I do is get my chest on the tank and even in DWC 1, it is not a problem and totally controllable.

Cheers.

I used that chart for one of my other bikes. Using my GPS it was off 10 mph.

Than you are right shilling, it could hit 199 on a Dyno. Here is my speed in the summer and revs. Lots left, I was not aware!

Nice find there... Almost 1,000 rpm left.. Where did you hit that speed, on the track or street?

That was on a private closed coarse with just me one it :D

Now I'm very interested to see how deep I can take it. All I wanted to see was the - - - was pleasantly surprised when I went to the monitor and noticed it keeps recording after 299 km/h

I went up 2 teeth on the rear (15/41) to gain similar flexibility.

Real life top speeds are not quite what we'd expect. Wind resistance is the biggest factor.

I ran my bike on a, uh, several mile long private road. Had it PINNED in 6th for quite some time. Speedometer went blank, but my Garmin 390LM logged 181mph. If I wore race leathers (w/speed hump), took the mirrors off, etc...maybe 183mph? Gearing Commander says my theoretical top speed at 11.5k RPM is 189mph.

I don't honestly think there's much past the 181mph I got. I'd have to gear in the other direction, probably 16/38, if I want to try for that magic 200mph.

I worked my way down to 1 on the DWC during the last 5 months. I switched DWC off a few weeks ago....

LOL :eek::D

I'm still getting used to how brutal this thing wheelies even with my 220lbs on it. I'm having a hard time imagining one tooth lower on the front sprocket.

Tried 14T-39 for a month or so. Very good for the streets, but I find the gearing is way too short for the local tracks.

Now on 15T-40, love it.

Did you manage to put it on a stock chain?... I was thinking 1 tooth in the rear would be just right. I always thought -1 would be a bit over kill.

Quite some tracks you have got there as a 14T-39 will keep you a top whack in 6th gear in excess of 300 km/h. I salute your prowess.
ArseHammer please be on standby for incoming. :D

If I remember correctly my speedo went ---- after 186 with stock gearing and tires. I don't recall how many rpms

HAHAHA!!! The first time I switched DWC off, I started giggling hysterically; it was SOOOO silly, I couldn't believe it.. :D

Went with DID and 2 extra links. 525.

I first had the 520 AFAM conversion, 14T/39 but ended with a swingarm rubbing issue, swap the front out to a 15T and the was problem solved. Figure there could be some offset issues with the AFAM 14T sprocket. Not sure if anyone else experience the same thing. Well, i got frustrated and ditched the setup. Running on 525 now. Happy with it.

With 14/39, for some tight hairpins (2nd gear corners), I had to upshift way before I could get my arse back to the seat. Tried to go in a gear higher but struggled with confidence. Yeah so, it isn't quite a top speed issue.

I am not a fast rider, just a regular trackday guy who learning the basics. Perhaps that is why I struggled to adapt to the 14/39.

The gearing commander chart is hypothetical.

It simply means that is what speeds that gearing could result in, if you could find a situation where you were on a perfectly flat road, with infinite HP and no wind resistance.

It has 600's doing in the 160's, but a stock 600 can't reach redline in 6th gear with stock gearing, it HP limited.

My point is still valid though.. 6th gear is geared too high on the 1299, it's a bit better on the R model.

Cheers and Merry Christmas. Thanks for all your contributions to the Forum this year, you always have great stuff to add to the conversations.
