Ducati prepares a revolution for the world 2014. No decision has yet been taken but the new General Manager of Ducati Corse, Gigi Dall'Igna, strong experience with the Aprilia and Aleix Espargaro, best driver on the track in MotoGP with an RSV-4 Superbike derived from the model, is thinking this year to embrace the philosophy of 'Open'.

That is run by agreeing to help but develop their own engine-management software, accepting the only one made available by Dorna for the new Marelli control unit.

The move, which lowers the level of sophistication of electronic controls and against which lashed the executive vice president of Honda Shuhei Nakamoto, threatening if it becomes mandatory in the future to abandon the MotoGP, brings with it not only disadvantages.

He realized the Ducati when, last November, he tried a GP13 at Jerez in configuration 'Open' revealing that the difference between the two options was very limited.

The Marelli control unit shown by Corrado Cecchinelli, technical manager DornaCiò that you can lose having less control channels Marelli control unit on the engine, in fact, is largely offset by the different Bridgestone tires in disposizion, softer. Only these in fact have an advantage of about six-tenths according to comparisons made by Ducati.

One thing, this, of which in 2013 was not much talked about commenting on the performance of Aleix Espargarò ART-Aprilia. Species in the tests on the lap, the soft compound brought great benefits.

To this must be added the largest tank capacity - 24 liters - which brings with it at that point also the futility of having to use sophisticated software to reduce power consumption. But there's more. Being able to run the engine with a fuel / air mixture richer brought csa Italian to understand that better (it looks much) also tractable engine and its disbursement. Moreover, it is known that by turning the motors 'lean' the answer is more surly.

But the benefits do not stop there: the team that will participate in the MotoGP Open configuration will also benefit from a greater number of tests, despite the limitation of the maximum number of tires available, and will be able to try on any circuit.

And this has to be seen that Ducati needs to try being more competitive to chase.

Aleix Espargaro on the Yamaha M1 'Open'A Dall'Igna suggest that this turn of sensational participation Ducati MotoGP could be the right move were also the performance of the current Yamaha Open in use at the team forward. Since the former M1 Tech 3 team performance, compared to the version 'official', were highly respected.

Which leads us to consider the fact that the Ducati this year will have to face not only Honda and Yamaha officers, but also as many as six corresponding versions of Open RC213 V and M1 in the hands of pilots from all over, as Pol Espargarò or Nicky Hayden .

And it is not, then, to betray the vocation 'prototype' of the Bologna: simply the rules of MotoGP now allows you to choose between version 'Factory' by proprietary software, 20 liters of fuel and 5 engines and 'Open', with Dorna software, 24 and 12 liter engines.

Crutchlow Ducati GP13 at Valencia in 2014 will race with an Open? As a result of this, the first test in Sepang, February 3 to 5, will serve to Andrea Dovizioso, Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Iannone to evaluate this opportunity. Will therefore be the official drivers and evaluate the performance of the GP13 on the track Malaysian Open, directing consequently the development of the Borgo Panigale.

Development which, incidentally, has not stopped: at Sepang in fact we will see a GP13.1 with various modifications of detail.

A possible confirmation of the decision of Ducati switch weapons and luggage at the Open would have as an immediate consequence of displacing the Honda (and Yamaha), depriving the third leg of the stool on which rests the official protest of the houses. And on two legs the chair on which he stood up screaming Nakamoto not stand.

The reasoning is the most at this moment is: do the best we can with what we have available. At the end of the day what counts is the final position and you can not risk getting behind, not so much of the RC213V and M1 officers, as their version of the Open.

After all, you will struggle even to confirm the sponsorship of Philip Morris, which expires at the end of 2014. The end justifies (largely) the means.

MotoGP, Rivoluzione Ducati: si punta sulla 'Open'

Why not? I mean if they're going to be running the the perennial top 10 (the lower half), then why not make it easier on yourself. Develop the bike that will be mandatory in 2016 and at the same time pester honda and Yamaha in the open class.

I think it also shows that to fix the problem is going to cost a lot of money and more time than they have right now. Suzuki is taking two years to get back into GP which shows the time and money comittment required, and after all that with R.D. doing the testing will they be top 5, or even make the rostrum?

A full factory effort running in open class. Sure, if it makes you feel better about your pathetic MotoGP effort Ducati.;)

I hope Nicky smokes them on his Open Honda RCV.

i too will be rooting for nicky to do well. i will root for cal as well as i like him.

This is a very sensible move by Ducati... The bike needs more power..obviously..now they can concentrate on that and not worry about fuel consumption....

i like the thinking out of the box from Gigi.

maybe the frame is the box he's also thinking out of ;)

Hopefully they but more money into WSBK this year instead of wasting it all in MotoGP

So whats the over/under on Cals average finishing position??? 8th??

Good question. If it were 2012 or 2013, I'd say he'd be fighting with Andrea for behind the two Honda, two Yamaha, two Honda satellite and at least 1 Yamaha Satellite. So yeah, probably 8th. But with the potential to run open and change a lot of stuff, plus whatever radical changes are made/discovered in the lab during the winter and at the firsts tests.....I would like to say he'll be fighting for 7th/6th at least.

We'll see, it's gonna be an exciting season!!! :D

How are KTM going to do in MotoGp this year???

Good question, smart ... :D

I'm sure they'll dominate in Moto3 like usual, unless Honda does truly succeed in their quest to build a "KTM killer"! Moto3 should be another exciting season, though I fully expect to see Marquez and Rins up front.

Couldn't resist...:p

I don't think lack of power is the issue. It's more about coming to grips (no pun intended) with the control tire and the frame engineering associated with that.

they can use the softer bridgebricks in open class

Potentially.....bridgestone hasn't quite decided. It was easier with the CRT's running not-as-powerful streetbike motors, but if you're running a Ducati with factory motor power, they may have big problems with softer tires. I think bridgestone is set to decide after the pre-season testing...

What, not gonna root for Rossi to have entertaining races as well, in possibly his last year?? ;)

if you can believe this i will root for him kind of. i dont want to see him leave and i like when the announcers say 7 time premier class cause they have nothing left to say. he has no shot of competing for better than forth but thats ok. he is entertaining.
