Thats not true. People would usually part out their bike and put it back into bone stock form and sell the bike at book value. They would then turn around and resell the aftermarket parts, so I don't agree with your statement that $8k in aftermarket parts should be taken "as a hit". Keep in mind, book value for this bike in bone stock form with current miles is $15k+.
