I have a question for you??? I cleaned and adjusted my chain last night. Everything seemed to go smoothly. When I got to work this morning I was looking everything I did last night over and for some reason I wiggled the rear 55mm nut on the left hand side, sprocket axle nut. It had the clip with the pin through the hole.

I'm wondering how in the hell that nut loosened? Did the dealer forget to tighten the nut and stuck the nut clip on? The nut was not even finger tight. Or, was this something I could of done wrong with the chain adjustment? I did remove the rear tire and clean everything? Let me know your thoughts and thanks.

I did look around the forums and found a torque of the same 170 Ft. Lbs on that nut? I know the 55mm nut on the R/H side of the bike gets torqued to 170 Ft. lbs, so it makes sense the other side is the same?

If it's got the clip on I can't see it working it's way loose it's virtually impossible as long as the clip is on correctly

With the correct torque on the nut and the clip properly installed, that nut will not back itself out on its own.

When I changed sprocket carrier/sprocket set up I found that the main nut was barely hand tight. I had never taken it apart and the clip was still in place. It had either come this way from the factory or dealer. I'm betting factory.

I removed the wheel myself and got a tyre fitted at the dealer. The technician told me that I needed to check the nut on the sprocket side as well when re fitting the tyre seeing as they can become loose. I said 'well he'll how can that be? The safety clip is in and the thing can't rotate?' He nodded slowly and said 'it can, check it'.

When tightening the wheel nut I checked the torque setting, the last 100nm of torque rotated the nut by less than a mm. The safety clip holes are actually quite wide with the intention of retaining everything on the bike, like safety wire, not to keep it tight.

It can be loose but you won't lose it...

Ps. I still have not checked the sprocket side.

My tech also mentioned that the nut on the sprocket side is the one that comes loose.

Is it a magic trick ? Can someone please explain how the nut can become loose if the safety clip is fitted correctly .

When you break any nut loose it needs very little rotation for the initial break. I think the clip holes have quite a lot of play and the difference between 60nm and 210nm can be taken up in the 2mm play available in the clip hole.
