"Would you be willing to give up what Edward Snowden has given up? He has given up his high paying job, his home, his girlfriend, his family, his future and his freedom just to expose the monolithic spy machinery that the U.S. government has been secretly building to the world. He says that he does not want to live in a world where there isn't any privacy. He says that he does not want to live in a world where everything that he says and does is recorded. Thanks to Snowden, we now know that the U.S. government has been spying on us to a degree that most people would have never even dared to imagine."

27 Edward Snowden Quotes About U.S. Government Spying That Should Send A Chill Up Your Spine

Unfortunately I would have to say no... This guy is very admirable for being so brave... We are not even close to being as free as we like to think we are....

I'm still baffled at why our media prattle on about Trevon Martin, wedding dresses, freakish weather, hornet's nests and other irrelevant trivia while the largest news story in the last 65 years is swept under the rug. Why aren't the media....the self professed guardians of our freedoms....screaming this at the tops of their collective lungs and demanding a public accounting of our government's behavior?

This is not the behavior I expect from the country I enlisted to defend when I donned a uniform twenty eight years ago. It's amazing the degree to which our leaders have abrogated their oathes to protect the Constitution of the United States....and the degree to which We the People have given them a pass in the doing.

who owns the media?

if you start asking the right questions, you're out...

Anyone that didn't think this was already going on, is not tech savy or is very naive. I have nothing to hide, and am fine with the people we (maybe not me in particular) put in office to make decisions to protect us. We wouldn't have stopped the Boston bomber as quickly if we weren't "watching", and how many other terror attempts. This guy trying to do what he thinks is "right" has endangered who knows how many people down the road.

give up freedom for liberty you mean?

no matter who tries to kill as many people as possible will figure out a way to do it, even if they get caught afterwards. but they will never kill as many people as listed below. which is totally legal, or what ever...

Number of deaths for leading causes of death
Heart disease: 597,689
Cancer: 574,743
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 138,080
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 129,476
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 120,859
Alzheimer's disease: 83,494
Diabetes: 69,071
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,476
Influenza and Pneumonia: 50,097
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 38,364

source: FASTSTATS - Leading Causes of Death

main reason for heart disease: poor nutrition (high fat&sugar), guess who makes the profits???

main reason for cancer: animal based foods (meat, eggs, dairy), guess who makes the profits???

stroke: nutrition, alcohol, tobacco, stress

look up how much money has been spent on the "war on cancer" since the 70s vs. the "war on terror" and put up the numbers...

just sayin.

people are willing to kill themselves and their kids by eating ...., smoking, etc.

on the other hand they let themselves get scared by a few "terrorists".

i am more scared of soccer moms, driving while on the phone.

this country is in great danger; for example in less than a month we have: AP-gate, IRS-gate, Benghazi-gate, etc.

i could go on...but until people do something other than entertain themselves it will only get worse.

here you can get even angrier now:

I don't care to start a big argument, you can't change my beliefs no matter how many links you put up, nor I yours. My radio transmissions/internet traffic is open to the public via hackers, fowarding, etc. If my goverment chooses to watch it, and makes me safer, I'm fine with that. They bug my house, or just enter at will - then I have a problem.

I am only stating my beliefs, not forcing them on you. As an American, I respect that your beliefs may differ, and will defend your right to make them.

our government is not making us safer; quite the opposite really.

if you want to be part of the sheeple that care not what the gov is doing to you and care not to verse yourself in the constitution, then of course i won't change your opinion. but you are aware of the constitution? if you read it, then logic would dictate that you'd be extremely opposed to the mass spying and would deem Snowden a certifiable patriot.

as an American Trauma, by the very same token that you'd "protect" my right to speech as per your above, you may want to rethink your position on "protecting" my right to PRIVACY. get it?

Baaaaaa! I'm sorry, but I don't consider my government knowing what the phone companies, Google, hackers, etc, already know, as giving up an "essentail freedom". Not to mention none of this technology was around then. We elected our officlas that did this. Anything pre-constitution was because we were ruled by people we didn't elect. That is what he was refering to. Again - all my opinion, and I guess from your links most Americans agree, sheep or no sheep :)

"Snowden said last night that he had no doubts about his choice of Hong Kong.

“People who think I made a mistake in picking Hong Kong as a location misunderstand my intentions. I am not here to hide from justice; I am here to reveal criminality,” Snowden said in an exclusive interview with the South China Morning Post.

“I have had many opportunities to flee HK, but I would rather stay and fight the United States government in the courts, because I have faith in Hong Kong’s rule of law,” he added.

Snowden says he has committed no crimes in Hong Kong and has “been given no reason to doubt [Hong Kong’s legal] system”.

“My intention is to ask the courts and people of Hong Kong to decide my fate,” he said.

...

Beijing will seek to interfere in a likely extradition case.

The Hong Kong government has so far refused to comment on Snowden’s case. While many Hong Kong lawmakers, legal experts, activisits and members of the public have called on the city’s courts to protect Snowden’s rights, others such as Beijing loyalist lawmaker and former security chief Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee said he should leave.

Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor director Law Yuk-kai said he was surprised by Snowden’s choice, adding: “Snowden’s positive view of Hong Kong no longer matches the reality.”

Law said a possible reason for his choice could be Hong Kong’s role as the region’s news hub.

“Hong Kong remains a hub of the global media, not least because of its proximity to the economic boom in southern China and the ease of access to many other Asian cities. The publicity could complicate efforts by the United States to charge Snowden and have him deported,” he said.

Snowden said yesterday that he felt safe in the city.

“As long as I am assured a free and fair trial, and asked to appear, that seems reasonable,” he said.

He says he plans to stay in Hong Kong until he is “asked to leave”.

The United States has not yet filed an application for extradition.

Snowden could choose to fight any extradition attempt in court. Another option open to him is to seek refugee status from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Hong Kong.

...
Local activists plan to take to the streets on Saturday in support of Snowden. Groups including the Civil Human Rights Front and international human rights groups will march from Chater Gardens in Central to the US consulate on Garden Road, starting at 3pm.

The march is being organised by In-media, a website supporting freelance journalists.

“We call on Hong Kong to respect international legal standards and procedures relating to the protection of Snowden; we condemn the US government for violating our rights and privacy; and we call on the US not to prosecute Snowden,” the group said in a statement.

Privacy. Freedom of the press. Right to keep and bear arms. Freedom of association. Gone.

The Voice. Bridezillas. NFL. Nascar. Fines disguised as taxes. Redistribution of wealth. Governmental intrusion into the very core of our lives in the name of safety. Alive and well.

In my opinion there should NEVER be a law that protects one from oneself (seatbelts, helmets, etc. I'd wear 'em anyway...but government mandating them is contrary to freedom), nor one that takes money from one man and gives it directly to another except in payment for services rendered (as in government employees).

What's wrong with this frikkin' country?

happy to read there are some clear minded people in this country.

watch out. they are for sure preparing a full media swing how snowden has sold its country and weakened it against "enemies". (can't tell, don't watch mass media)

lets forget about the weakening of this country by financing the bankrupt banking system with taxpayers' money...
