Anyone know what this screw goes to?

So I came outside to find my 1299 laying on its side. Looks like someone bumped it and it fell over. I have frame sliders so didn't look like there was any real damage until I picked her up. What I found was a screw, nut, and a piece of the frame that was broken off. If you look at the picture it was number 5 and 6 along with the little housing it bolts to. Can anyone tell me what it's for or how screwed I am? Online it says it's the yoke limit screw, but I can't really tell its function.

That's the steering stop that is cast into the top of the lower triple clamp. Yes, you're screwed, that is not repairable, it has to be replaced with a new lower triple clamp/steering stem unit.

GOOD NEWS - I know where you can get a used one! ;-)

I wished I would have asked on here if any one had a used one. I just ordered a new one last week. I saw my steering stop was broken off when I was strapping my bike down after the track. Not even sure when it happened.

The cost is about 600 bucks for a tree(yoke). Costs more to have a dealer install though.
Make sure you don't extend the handlebars too far in the direction that it broke or you WILL damage your fairing, tank, or both, with the over extended handlebars.

I remember you can buy some little accessories that stops this happening

Always meant to get some but never did, cheaper than a new part though

Is that the part that bolts to the frame ? About 60 bucks? I ordered a set of IMA clamps because I broke both , then saw this part . Surley you could grind some extra adjustment into them ?

Yes you can. I've got these fitted to my bike. They are made by R&G and bolt to the front subframe mounts. They are comprised of a small bracket bent at 90 degrees that hold a small nylon bung. When you turn the handlebars lock to lock, the fork tubes hit these soft nylon bungs and prevent the lockstop screws from contacting the lockstops cast onto the bottom triple/yoke. You will notice a marginal loss of turning circle as a result. They also prevent the casual thief from snapping the castings by slamming your steering left and right. Alternatively it might be possible to have the lugs welded back on to the casting and at the same time get them reinforced.

Anyhow here's the link and a picture:

The review of them is .... as it effects turning circle

It's barely noticeable TBH. Ive had them on both the 1199 and the 1299 with no issues at all. Cheaper than a new triple tree casting in the event your bike tips over.

I disagree, but maybe that's because I park my bike in a tight space. It was a huge PITA with them on. Also, you can't lock your forks, it won't allow the little nub to line up. I took mine off awhile ago.

If you're not going to fix the broken steering stop in the short-term, then despite the marginal downsides some have mentioned I'd highly recommend installing the R&G lockstop savers as a stop-gap to prevent further damage to the bike, as well as preventing a broken thumb in the event of a tankslapper or other mishap. We have them in stock in Black and they're only 25 bucks, and easy to install.

I do not have them myself but thanks for posting the details and the personal experience. Far better than just putting out a ........ opinion because of some review you read online.

cheers
