Is anyone replacing their brake fluid when it turns black? I have seen heaps of photos posted by forum members that have black rear brake reservoirs as well. Now my front reservoir fluid has turned black. Very unusual for that much discolouration in 5000 kms!

Will replace with Motul RBC 600.

i did the front @ ~2500 miles, to get some air out, now at 5500 it is still fine. clutch also, this fluid was darker, but has held up pretty well, too.
rear has turned dark, will replace that soon.

Have no idea what's up with our rears. Will turn black fast! Mine was black by the 600mi service!

Maybe all the heat from that uncovered head? You guys need the new heat shield! :)

My rear is dark and so was my front. I did a quick bleed at the weekend but I'll be flushing the system with Motul 660 next month ready for the nice weather.

Not sure it this a 100% true but was told once you crack the seal on brake / clutch fluid the bottle has a shelf life of 1 month so if you need to bleed in the future you should use a fresh bottle. True or not?

-- Not True - brake fluid will however deteriorate by absorbing moisture - so if you do not properly seal the container you will have less than ideal fluid for your next flush/change/top off

-- there is a general opinion to use fresh fluid at all times...but re-using a bottle thats been properly sealed will be fine....

That's what I was always told too - use fresh fluid. What do you guys consider "properly resealed though"? I just tighten the lids down real tight and call it good.

lol at capt i just tighten the lid real tight and call it good.
I use Series 600 DOT 4 Racing Brake Fluid by AMSOIL. I also use AMSoil for my oil changes.
i know motul may be slightly better but its not 6 bucks a qt better.

Back rear tubing is black. On the front I have replaced the tubing with Brembo 6MM clear tubing (I posted an advisory about this with Riz reservoirs).

Mine went black on front and back within the first 200km. Will see what they say when first service is done.

AMSoil, its very good, equally as good as any motul product... Dot4 600.... Using AMSoil in both race bikes.. BTW, rear cam cover on the S is leaking... Again... Let the fun start... I love racing ducati's they have character...

yes...I noticed that both rear brake and clutch fluid reservoirs turn darker quicker than the big front brake reservoir.

I just bled both my front clutch and front/rear brake fluids using Motul's Racing Brake Fluid (RBF 600) and my brakes and clutch action is more precise, feel is better then before.

Noticed that the Clutch and rear brake reservoir fluids are darker again in both small reservoirs compared to that of the front brake fluid's big reservoir after 2,600kms use.

Hmmmmmmmmmm....but brake and clutch action is normal and precise as ever.

I guess the real question is- does the darker fluid indicate degradation and a loss of fluid performance?

I'm not going to worry about it and just change it at what I deem are regular intervals. Otherwise that rear fluid is going to need to be changed every 500 miles or so since that's about what it took for mine to turn black.

Same here, turned dark quickly. Doesn't bother me that much, but if there is a fluid that won't discolor I'd switch out.

Can anyone confirm if the Motul brake fluid mentioned does not discolor?
