I replaced quite a bit of my plastics with Ilmberger carbon fiber on my 2015 RR and while the fenders or tank cover alone didn't seem to influence the feel of the bike any, the sum of all the swapped out components, including the bellypan, appears to have had a significant cumulative effect.
I still wanted to have a red bike, so I chose to remove just the black and white pieces of the stock covers.
No, it doesn't make me a better rider per say, but I would say that it makes my ride better, both the experience and bike aesthetics...
With the carbon fiber, Shorai battery, and dropping 6 lbs from just the exhaust, it has lightened the bike considerably.
