I have tried to find a thread on this, with no luck. However I am sure I read that this is a real ball ache to fit....is this true..

is this true, any advice please.

thanks

There are several posts, but the basics are:

Remove the right side faring
Unplug the sensor from the harness
Remove/unscrew from the exhaust - coming in from the bottom, 17mm wrench (several short turns)
Remove the 2 sub frame bolts, so you can lift it up to R&R the shield under it
Remove the bolts holding the shield
Lift the shield out

Reverse the process.

I don't want to start a heat thread or jack this thread to turn into that... So please do not take it for that... buuuuttttt...

How much better is the Carbon shield for the 'alleged' issue? I've not been through a summer yet with mine, but I know that the temperature in the crotch area did get really sweaty in Canadian September riding. I'm trying to avoid the heatshield "upgrade" in possible favour of something nicer looking.

If you want to learn more about carbon than anyone here. Send the owner of Shift Tech (who is also found here) an email or PM asking him all about carbon and why it gets damaged from the heat in that area. Most knowledgable guy you will ever meet!

We all think the OEM being metal, certainly radiates heet. Most CF ones are also lined with silver foil, which helps reflect. But the way to go may be the new one that comes in the kit Ducati is supplying for free, just not the cylinder covering part.

Quick question, it looks like it will slide out without the need to pivot the subframe.... What's the snag?

Just minding my own business reading up on stuff when BOOM-sweaty Canadian crotches. Damn-

Did it last weekend and it was about same as described above, but little different.
That metal piece is sharp as .... so wore mechanix gloves while pulling it off too!

I helped Gunny with the removal of that heat shield and here are a few other pointers.

First if you are doing a carbon rear hugger i would suggest taking off your original hugger first then do the heat shield then put on the carbon hugger so you dont damage your new carbon hugger (its very tight in there)

Second there are 2 bolts under the seat that should dont have to but should be removed. Gunny bent the crap out of the metal heat shield but you cant do that with the carbon one.
we didnt remove any fairings.

lastly the carbon heat shield gets broken down by the metal bolts. they get hot and eventually burn through the carbon. The solution i am looking into is nylon bolts but i dont know what the break down temp is of the nylon bolts. im hearing the thing gets pretty hot but much like the lockness monster or bigfoot, all the claims i have not experienced for myself

PS the gloves are major. you can seriously slice up your hands if you dont have any on even if your careful

You need to use something like the washer on the side of the heat shield or the lower shields. Please don't use nylon bolts.... Maybe delrin, but good luck.

If you didn't remove fairings, did you twist the crap outa the sensor wire?

thanks for this. i wasnt sure just throwing ideas out there.

I'm surprised that there was enough slack in the sensor cable to remove the o2 sensor without removing the right fairing. Good for you guys if there was, I didn't want to risk it, the wiring seemed taught in my case.

Also make sure that the bolts you use are of the proper length. The oem bolts came out after the install but haven't since using a washer on each. I'm replacing my burned one today with a matte carbon guard that Trauma pointed me to.

Best success,

Is there a cheaper place to get the screws? And just normal hardware store washers?
