CONS. AVG 1 (go easy on me)

Hi Peeps,

Just wanting to know if people are finding the average fuel consumption readings accurate? Yes, I'm mostly a commuter, and yes, I don't actually care what the consumption is, but the reading says it's 4.5 - 5 L/100, where as my actual calculations are more like 6.5 - 7 L/100.

a) are people finding similar discrepancies; and
b) is this 30% discrepancy in anyway misinforming the ECU (for people that know about these things)?

I've got my 1000K service in a few days, and just wanted to know if it was worth bringing up. I've mostly ridden 600-1000cc jap bikes for the past 23 years, and in comparison, below 4500-5000 revs, this bike is dead and lumpy (I'm still in my run-in period)... but am happy if this is normal. My zx10r readings over the past 8 years were always pretty good (within 0.4L).

Mine is actually less accurate than that on my commute. Shows 2.8l/100km on the dash but works out to be 7.1L/100km when I look at fuel usage and actual distance.

I don't know about a 30% discrepancy. However, trip computers in all vehicles can vary in accuracy (density & temperature differences/no ATC, vapor recovery systems, brand of fuel, summer vs. winter fuel if you have such a thing there, expanding & contracting plastic tanks, etc.).

But usually the variance is in the single digits (<10%).

Some systems only use the fuel gage & odometer to calculate, while others also use ECU/ECM data to provide more inputs to increase the accuracy of the outputted calculations.

My Multistrada avg con is pretty accurate.

For those interested, according to my dealer, because I haven’t been riding it above 7k, it could under read (as much as 30%). My commute is 50% highway and 50% town/outskirts.

I don’t have the knowledge to dispute this, but do find it a little bit difficult to believe, given I rode exactly the same with my zx10, and it was spot on.

Ah well.

It sounds about right, it's only during my commute that it seems a long way off. If I'm on the track or on a aggressive street ride with mates it seems to be much closer to being correct

Okay, thanks for that. If others are experiencing the same thing, i'm More comfortable with it. I don't actually use it, I just wondered if it meant the ecu was getting incorrect info (as I don't know much about these things).
