Coolant temps?

As you know it's a "bar graph" now instead of the actual temperature. What's the hottest you've seen when riding?

I'm still breaking in the second bike and was doing some city rides today. I live downtown so unfortunately have to go through traffic everytime I go home. I was riding the highway on the way home, then got to downtown traffic. I saw my temperature hit the 4th bar (5 bars total) for the first time. Ambient temperature is still chilly around 10 degrees celcius (50 degrees F).

I read the manual and it said the first bar is 40 degrees C, and the 5th bar is 125 degrees. That's 17 degrees per bar. So 4th bar should be 108 degrees...which means it was running over 108 degrees when I saw it. I know it's a hot running bike, so just wanted to see what temps you've seen yours at to see if it's normal. I'd imagine it would be much hotter on a summer day, and if I go past 6k rpms or better yet, at a track day. I know the hottest I've ever seen my 1199R was around 104-105 degrees Celcius when normal riding.

1199r / 1299 highest I’ve gotten in slow speed to full stop & go traffic, the temps would be 215/220F when the fans turn on - not a big deal for those bikes - desmo-seduce-me (Desmosedici d16rr) was about the same

Yes I see the same on my 1199R. Never seen more than about 220F. But just gently breaking in the bike today, in 50F ambient temperature, but got above 226F. Not a big deal to me but just want to make sure it's normal.

It seems like another mind altering experience if 4 out of 5 bars get lit up and you sit wondering if bar #5 is going to screw the pooch - I’d let it idle on the driveway waiting for Bar #5, and see what happens

I’d definitely have the canister removed and get rid of the cats, even if those wouldn’t be the true cause of coolant heat buildup - I’m certain it’s cause is more the lack of air moving thru the radiator at sufficient speed

I use a laser pointed thermo gizmo for my race tires. Have also used same to check temp at radiator inlet after a race. This will give an exact temp.
They don’t cost much and good to safety check if your warmers are heating up tires correctly.

I wonder how accurate the factory temp gauge is actually. This is exact and will confirm what bar 5 lights up at .

Fourth bar on an 80 degree day on mine sitting in traffic

Damn... and it was only 50 degrees here today. But at least someone's seeing 4 bars so I guess it's not too abnormal. Thanks!

You’re comparing it to the old bike which was a twin, and as far as I’m concerned, a completely different entity. It will have different running characteristics. In fact, although smaller displacement as such, it obviously has more cylinders x 4 + more bangs per revolution + more fuel consumption = more heat. That’s kinda basic physics

Very true. Just want to double check. Checked at the dealer and everything checks out. All good!

Probably how it develops all that ridiculous power, more fuel in = more power out so to speak.

Glad all's checking out. I do like these bikes, I think the R is going to be phenomenal.
