Do I need the metal shield, my S had full exhaust and it didn't come with one, and I had no problem. Also anyone cut down the new style carbon heat shield, I prefer the look of the old style. Just want to know the easiest way to cut it. Thanks.......

You can always buy an 899 shield on E-Bay. Same shape as the older 2012 year 1199 but is double walled like the later versions.

You can cut carbon with a dremel and a cut-off wheel, but be SURE to wear a dust mask. You don't want to breathe that stuff.

ABS shield needs the metal to act as barrier & help reflect heat, I've cut down my carbon shield to minimize it, I always tape it up with the no residue masking tape blue / green type then mark out the cut line, use a mini air saw or jig saw then I finish the cut edge with a fine file

I was gonna ditch the metal piece and just use the metal lining tape. I never noticed it on my old S. The new cover is it thinner than the old termi piece? I guess im asking will it do damage to anything if I don't use it.

Stop now.

Leave it alone.

I baked bad with the original termi heat shield. You could not pay me to go backwards. It was stupid hot until the upgrade you now have.

IIRC, the old covers like the one on your 1199S were metal, not ABS.

It might make your ... a little hotter, but its not going to damage anything. If too much heat gets to the carbon, it may yellow a bit.

Worthless crap IMHO. Now the Ti heat wrap on the pipe really helped seat and leg temps

Looked close to me.

Now the stock stuff was thicker. but not CF.

my 1rst gen small cf cover was thin and had the tape crap stuck to it from the factory. I doubt you would hurt it.

Now in 4 years of Ducatis, the worst week I have ever had was the week the piece you want was on my bike.

At track speeds when you slow down it was just way to hot on a 90f day. Soon as you slowed down even a little it was ridiculously hot.

With the new CF heatshield and wrap under seat, its actually cooler then my 848 was

Outhouse are you saying the old full termi system shield was bad? And are you referring to the "new shield" as the updated regular
Shield frm Ducati?

I have SSTK headers full Term' 14R rear pipe
I tried w/o carbon shield but with Ti header wrap
It's fine riding but far too hot even for me at stop
lights etc, I've now cut down the carbon shield
To bare min al will re install

IMO the regular DEI header tape is far better than the TI
Besides which the TI wrap is very slick & hard to work
