Dovi deserves a thread of his own if he hasn't already got one!

The first couple of wins seemed like right time, right place situations but now he's proven he can do it in all conditions. We met him at a Ducati dinner at Silverstone last year and he is every bit as unassuming as he seems on the camera. A worthy rider to take Ducati back onto the top step for sure.

I agree. I think he deserves great credit for developing the Ducati with team work. I think he learned a little about turning from Stoner last year, maybe part of it is bike set up. (BTW, what happened to Stoner, haven't seen him this year). He has stated in interviews that he tries to build on the Ducati's strengths and minimize its weaknesses. That is what the rider should do. Engineering is always a compromise. I think he also does that with himself. He knows he is not a one lap wonder like Marquez, but he works on race pace, and then is patient. I think his racecraft is currently second to none. Give a little in the corners, save the tires. Use the horsepower to make it back on the straight. His greatest skill is braking, he is damn deep and consistent. Doesn't need or want to lead the race until the last couple of laps. He has a cool head. I think he has a great shot at the title and would love to see him take it. He has titles in the lower classes so I don't think the pressure will get to him. Go Dovi!!

Well deserving champion. Rooting for him until the end now -- he should do well at the remaining circuits and will need a good advantage going into Valencia.

6 Race left

Misano - good for Ducati, even Rossi got a dry podium
Aragon - Hope for rain?
PI - MM fell 2x both time leading, DQ once also leading, otherwise he owns the track
Motegi - Stop and Go track, should work for Dovi
Sepang - Dovi won last year
Valencia - Lucky to be top 5

Dovi will be strong in Misano, Motegi, Sepang. Needs to hold the advantage after Sepang, the Ducati is a sitting duck in Valencia.

I like it :)

Agreed that he has a chance and while I still think Marquez will win the championship, I want Dovi to win. Very humble in admitting he wasn't the fastest at Silverstone. When not leading the race to conserve fuel and tyres, I love how he seems to study the different race lines each rider has, and which corners they're really good at overtaking in. He then knows how to defend his position by choosing a different race line when he starts moving up the grid. Bloody brilliant!

The way I see it, is that Ducati seems to have a "much balanced" bike this season compared to Honda and Yamaha. I have seen Hondas and Yamahas struggle on one track and kick ... on another, but Ducati always seem to be good enough to fight for the win. Dovi adds a big factor to this, since he knows how to ride the bike without crashing a lot. Also, as you guys pointed out and as he said, he knows the strengths and weaknesses of the Desmocedici very well and he uses that knowledge to win races towards the end.

A Ducati championship would be awesome. Marquez is too good to lose, and I really think he could have won Silverstone if not for the engine trouble. Did he "overwork" that engine or is all that electronically controlled so that you cannot (for example) over-rev the power plant?

Hell of a season so far !!!

You can't even say he was helped by the Honda blowing up at Silverstone. By that I mean of course he was, but he held off Marquez on his own in Austria. He really is on form and he's making Jorge look like a rookie in the process.

It will be close, but I think its possible. My heart is with him, but I remain skeptical.

Yeah agreed, I dont think Marquez and the Honda would have been as fast even if he had not got the blown engine. It looks like they were at their limit with the bike to try and get the speed anyhow. I dont think anyone would argue that Marquez is not the fastest outright rider but Ducati seem to have the most balanced overall package. That said Yamaha seem to be getting on top of their tyre wear issues so could be back in the running with both Valentino and Vinales capable of fighting for the win. I'm tempting to get booked up for the final in Valencia as it could be an absolute nail biter!

It's nice to have a thread about racing that doesn't get infected by the BS that every race thread gets infected by.

Dovi doesn't have the sheer talent to go fast that Marquez does. That being said, the Michelin tires have given opportunity to not only the most talented riders, but now the smartest, most strategic riders as well. Dovi is at least the equal to Marquez, Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Rossi in that department. Better than Vinales is, but MV is still young and inexperienced on a bike that can win. I am happy to see him doing it, and not just in adverse conditions where his team's decisions come out right. He beat Marquez outright in Austria and I do not think Marquez had anything for him in Silverstone, blown engine or no.

This, to me, is in stark contrast to the Bridgestone days, where the tires were more easily adaptable to changing circumstances and it was easier to get the setup right to go fast. Those things hardly wore most of the time. It was easier to nail the setup, and at that point talent won out.

I'm still of two minds on the changes made to the championship - specifically tires and electronics. On one hand I appreciate the (relative) parity it's brought to the field, with more riders capable of showing good than before. But to me it is also less "pure" than before - the parity is manufactured by the rules, not necessarily because bike/rider combos have become more equal. It would be nice if the other manufacturers were able to just "catch up" to Honda and Yamaha. But I do realize that's a pipe dream, just like socialism. Honda will always be able to out-spend everyone to win, as long as they have the motivation to do so.

I've never been a fan of the spec tire rule, though I do like they eliminated midnight specials. You end up developing the bike to the tire, and there is no way that's more cost-effective. The smaller manufacturers, or those with smaller race budgets, can't keep up. For me the best thing to do would be to let each manufacturer work with their chosen tire company and develop the best tire for their bike. Then make those tires available to everyone who rides a Ducati, a Honda, a Yamaha, etc. That to me would be more "pure" because each package would be able to develop to the best of their ability, and you would see different approaches to going fast. With spec tires everyone tries to hit the same target, in the same manner.

I hope Dovi's got what it takes. For years, i always thought Ducati missed out on wins at Qatar because Dovi didn't have it.

2015 2nd place
2016 2nd place
2017 2nd place

Dovi in Misano

Another impressive Q2 by Dovi and the rest of the Ducatis. I will be up and watching in real time. Go Dovi!!
