Ducati 1299 Slow in races

Ducati Forum

Help Support Ducati Forum:

We removed the Ohlins with Mupo shocks this week. We did an 1.5 sec faster than the previous race. The bike is now at its limit. The next step will be the Tuneboy mapping.

Just sad that all the other Ducati's was running 2 seconds slower per lap, so there wasnt any body to chase the bike.
There is an definitive 1 sec lack in power out of the corners. Its feels like an slow throttle response or something.

If you are losing time mid-corner, the bike isn't slow. That is either rider deficiency, setup issues, or both.

If the other bikes are leaving you on long straightaways, then that could be an issue with the bike (assuming the rider is running good lines and has sufficient drive grip).

It sounds to me like none of these issues can be blamed on the bike itself. Personally (I am racing a 1299S), I actually make up time on people mid-corner. I have found that I can enter corners harder, carry more mid-corner speed, run tighter lines and still don't lose anything on corner exits.

Same . My bike is a slayer enter mid and exit . The bike has so much more I just need to improve .

There is an old saying.

Hello Chis

Can you please tell me what mapping are you using on your bike.

We are waiting for our Tuneboy kit to arrive.
There is an definitive few seconds lack in power in Mid-Revs, then you can feel the HP.

We need to get 1.5 seconds more and i surely think the Tuneboy will help with this.

I use the RapidBike module with a custom dyno tune for VP's U4.4 race fuel. If you are still working with the stock map (or just the basic upmap), then there is a lot left to be desired with fueling and power delivery. You will see a lot of improvement with the tuner and custom dyno tune.

The 1299 has a great midrange compared to other bikes, but that oversquare motor still likes and needs to be revved. Even though it is a twin, I try to never let the revs get down below 7k.

Of course every corner is different, but typically speaking, I will trail brake to apex and try to have my gearing/gear selection so I will be around 7k when I start rolling on the gas. That is enough that I have great drive coming off apex, but the bike won't be too "peaky". Then the RPMs/power will build as I am finishing the corner, and I will have to upshift as I am standing the bike up, just before I get fully upright.

BTW - don't be surprised if you need to go softer on the rear shock. We have went into the forks twice and rear shock twice since the first initial setup. Wilkson gave me that advice entering my first weekend and he was exactly right.

In the beginning, tire wear was good...too good...as in perfect. I was sitting at the top of the stroke and spinning a lot. Going softer on the rear let the tires load up and eat, and drive grip improve dramatically.

I've read all the posts regarding this topic. It appears to me that you're still chasing set-up and tuning issues that are hampering your riding skills/confidence. If this is your first Ducati/ V twin it takes time to get use to how the bike behaves vs. Japanese bikes. Continue testing set up/tuning options to learn what works best for you. That said, always consider your riding skills before the equipment. FYI: I've been in this sport for more than 30 years including 15 years of club racing. I've been on track with national & world caliber riders and this topic freqeuently comes up. The answer is the same...prep the bike to your preference in order to gain confidence which equals speed.

Depending on the track changing back to a progressive setting other than a flat setting will work well . The bike likes a more progressive setting on a more high speed (Phillip Island ) flowing type track .

Thanks for that. One of the tracks I will be racing at next month (Barber Motorsports Park) is a very flowing type track with some high speed sections. There really isn't much of a straightaway to speak of, top speed for Liter bikes is somewhere in the 140's (mph), but there are some good flowing corners/sections.

Will you be coming to RRR next week?

Nope, ill be out of the country.

I will be at Cycle Jam at Road Atlanta, then Barber.

Cool. I'll be at both. with my daughter on the way, Barber and VIR will be my last two races of the season. The wife did give me permission for GNF.

You are in Dynojet country. Talk to Alain at Dynojet in Bez Valley, install a PCV with autotune and ignition module, have it race mapped by him and Bob's your uncle. Give Alain my best. DynoJet: Home
