I’m waiting on my first Ducati next month. I decided on the streetfighter S based upon my switch to naked bikes back in 2010. I’m now 50, I raced motocross in my youth, as an adult I’ve had, GPZ1000 (ninja in US) Yamaha Exup, 2 x ZZR 1100, Zx9R, Yahama R1 and currently the BMW K1300R (wasn't sold in US).

As an experienced rider, what are the major differences I will find when I get my Ducati? I haven’t ever ridden a modern variant but did ride a 916 back in the day (I found it lacking power). My K1300R has around 180 bhp and has been a stellar machine. I note the Ducati has about an extra 20 hp and weighs about 90lbs (40kg) less.

Couple of extra questions.

Is the suspension rear preload adjusted manually with a C wrench or is it electronic (like my bmw)?
Do ducati need a running in period?
Any specific advice for me as a first time ducati owner?

Thanks guys

Welcome aboard!

All the tuner guys heat cycle their bikes. Ducati’s need to be babied until they’re warm but once it is, rip around on it and get it nice and hot (hard beak in)

I like reving it out and then coasting as the revs fall. down shift, down shift, down shift

doesn’t really matter, piston rings are seated b4 it leaves the factory

just get used to it and ride it. You’re a Florida guy, should be riding every day.

enjoy! And look for flames

Thanks DucatiKev, I see you’re in Florida too. Any Ducati events or group rides here? Also, I’ve been reading about the fuel mapping being messed up from the factor and reflashing being required. Surely that can’t be true on a modern bike?

surely it is, I believe that they run the bikes very lean from the factory o pass US emissions regulations.
It makes the bike run hot and have trouble at lower revs. I can speak from experience that it’s true with the big twin in my 1299

but I think all u need for the V4 is the Akra upMap

my 1299 had the UpMap and it still ran like .... until I did the BrennTuning flash which really helps the bike run cooler, but also there’s a hack to have the fans come on at lower temps
The fueling has been sorted, it wheelies at 1,500 RPMs now, it’s nuts

Either Akra and UpMap or send the stock muffler assembly to @Phl for modification for a lot less than even the Akra slipons and get a good tune in her, you’ll be set

And get that god damn charcoal EVAP canister out of there. Have them to it at the dealer
