Wow!

Sounds like a car company is the potential buyer, and it's not Mercedes Benz. I wonder which one it is or would be?

Ducati already sells around 42K bikes a year (as stated in the article). How much bigger do they want to get?

Given the recent German car company purchases, I am going to guess that it's Porsche?????

superbikeplanet is reporting that it would be triple their investment from 2005 if they sold in 2012 for 1 Billion Euro. Pretty good return on investment to say the least.

I remember not being happy they changed the Ducati graphics, going from more intricate gold, to blocky white.

Guess it was the right move :D:D:D:D:D

From Reuters: "Volkswagen declined to comment. VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech, who said he drives Ducatis himself, admitted a few years ago that he regretted not having acquired the brand back then when Ducati could have been bought "for peanuts." "

1.5B is pocket change for those guys.

Yup, I have been hearing that it is most likely Volkswagen, but it also could be Indian auto company Mahindra. (whom I believe make tractors, agricultural equipment, and small cars) To be honest, I dont care who buys Ducati, as long as they leave them alone and dont destroy the company by trying to change up what they do... not too likely though, I guess. If someone must buy Ducati than I would like to see Fiat buy them, they own Ferrari and seem to know how to let them be...

I get it, Ducati wants to have the deep pockets similar to the Japanese (Honda, Yamaha) and Germans(BMW) COMPANIES, whose yearly revenues are in the billions outside of motorcycle sells. All Ducati has are motorcycles and apparel? This is in comparison to the other companies that have motorcycles plus: cars, electronic audiovisual equipment, farming equipment, watercraft, snowmobiles, trucks...oh yeah, and apparel.
Basically, Ducati wants access to the billions$$$ that these other companies are able to use to turbo-charge it's R & D division. Allowing Ducati to be more competitive and dominate racing consistently at the WSBK and the motoGP level.

MOTODOC

I hope Fiat buys it and puts in next to ferrari and gets Luca Montezemelo to run both. Keep it italian and keep it in a stable where it belongs...racing.

looks like Volkswagen has taken over Ducati

Where did you get that from Shane? I know they have been interested for some time but the latest gossip was an indian company Hero. Personally I'd love it to be VW.

Looking more likely by the day; fresh info from MCN...

Would be a good outcome, I should think. They know how to manage a low volume, premium Italian niche brand (see Lamborghini), and have had no trouble maintaining the other brand identities and unique characters of all the marques they own, even when they're sharing some parts under the skin for cost-saving. Plus they have boatloads of money, which bodes well for stability. Piech's known to want Ducati, so it probably comes down to whether Investindustrial get a better offer.

Not surprise a auto related company from China or india may buy....(like Bajaj with some shares on KTM..KTM150,200 duke....TATA.. Jaguar..Geely...Drivetrain (DSI)....)

Do other motorcycle/car european OEM or companies lack know-how in the auto industry?

Production knowhow and cost effective, they (China and india) are pretty sure they have where they are.
Innovation knowhow, they are likely to lack and acquire and keep it (IP and R&D)overseas.

Workforce for engineers in China and india high turn-over(job hop from company to company), meaning IP is going to be homogenous within China and india. Only way for these local companies to have new innovation and sustaining IP is to acquire outside and keep 'em situ.

They will just focus on taw materials and production...

but i could be wrong.....
